Chris Rickert: Guns vs. votes: You can’t shoot someone with a ballot
http://host.madison.com/news/local/chris_rickert/article_ebdebe6e-8028-11e0-9609-001cc4c03286.html

It’s not often that I listen to commercial AM radio and the corporatized “news-talk” formats that dominate it.

But Mitch Henck of Clear Channel-owned 1310 WIBA tends to avoid the kind of hysterical choir-preaching prevalent among the Rushes, Vickis and Eds of the world. And last week, one of his callers raised a good question:

By opposing efforts in the Republican-led Legislature to allow gun lovers to pack concealed heat just about anywhere and require voters to show a photo ID at the polls, aren’t Democrats hypocritically dissing one constitutional right (bearing arms) while getting all self-righteous about another (voting)?

<snip>

Similarly, Johns Hopkins University gun violence researcher John Vernick told me that after reviewing conflicting research on whether more guns meant more or less violence and crime, the National Research Council concluded it was impossible to determine a causal link.

<more>

The National Research Council is part of the US National Academy of Sciences - the GOP/NRA claim/lie that more guns makes us safe is not supported by research.

It is a fairy tale

yup

2. More guns may not make us more safe...
More guns may not make us more safe, but the continuing decline in violent crime coupled with the record sales of firearms and ammunition over the last 4 years certainly indicate that more guns do not make us less safe.

3. The prevelance of guns has no effect on violence or crime
Which begs the question of why you are so bent out of shape about them being in the hands of law abiding citizens.

4. By attempting to prohibit people from voting while making it easier for them to shoot each other,
isn't the Repukelican party being hypocritical? Although no hate radio host would ever bring it up, the 2nd Amendment is the only one that's grown over the last 30 years, while the others have all shrunk.

5. I imagine there are a few million dead iraqis who might disagree on how dangerous votes are.
If they were still alive.

7. It is a fairy tale...
...one that pretty much nobody here has ever supported (at least none that I've ever seen). But hey, don't let little things like reality stand in your way, jpak. You never have before...

8. It was impossible to determine a casual link
Which means your crusade to reduce guns in hope of reducing crime is a fairy tale as well.

Nice to see you admit it!
