Confederate Flag bikini sparks argument, gun pulled out, police say
http://rockhill.wbtv.com/news/crime/confederate-flag-bikini-sparks-argument-gun-pulled-out-police-say/63183

A Rock Hill man says someone threatened him with a gun over the weekend after a dispute broke out involving a woman wearing a confederate flag bikini, police say.

<snip>

Gainey told police he was with friends at a pool party at 1807 Paces Rivera Avenue when a group of black teenage males approached.

Gainey told officers the men began calling the group in the pool "racists because a female in his group had a bikini depicting a 'stars and bars rebel flag.'"

The report states the men surrounded Gainey "causing him to stand up believing that they were about to fight him." One of the men in the group allegedly pulled out a weapon described in the report as a "very small semi-automatic pistol." Gainey told officers the man pointed at Gainey in an apparent attempt to intimidate him.

5. I see where you're having a problem, buddy....
it's that you have a problem distingushing between legal and ILLEGAL carry of a firearm.
Let me highlight one of the dead-giveaways that this firearm was ILLEGAL:
"Gainey told police he was with friends at a pool party at 1807 Paces Rivera Avenue when a group of black teenage males approached."

North Carolina does not issue concealed carry permits to "teenagers", nor is the sale of a handgun to a "teenager" legal under federal statute.

Yup

14. Appreciate the correction
Was proceeding from the fact that the TV station is in Charlotte, NC, my bad. For purposes of the OP, however, the illegality of the "teenagers" carrying a pistol remains accurate.

7. Really? Someone thought they should pull a gun?
My ancestors fought for the North a couple hundred years ago, and I'd think that would be the end of the shooting. Though what the Stars & Bars represents is differently translated by many from racial hatred to jumping orange Dodges over creeks, it's just a flag.

I have a British sports car and I often festoon myself in a Union Jack t-shirt. It doesn't mean I want to avenge the Boston Tea Party. I do have opposition to state representation of the flag, but this is a private individual who thought, correctly or not, that it looked trendy and colorful.

Sometimes a little fashion sense can go a long way, but even in this case, there's no reason for gunplay:

Some teen-aged punks surround a guy, call him racist, and pull a gun on him because because some woman has a Confederate flag bikini?

Are you upset by the bikini?

Are you upset that the article identified the underage hoodlums as black?

Are upset the article did not identify the race of the woman or the man the thugs had surrounded?

or is it just the word "gun" was in the headline and that was enough to get your knickers in a knot and you don't have a clue, or much care, what the fuck the story said?

23. So..
A group of shitheads decided that they didn't approve of a bikini and started shouting obscenities (or the could have calmly walked over and begun a discussion, but I find that highly unlikely), began posturing offensively and one even goes so far as to whip out a (probably stolen, DEFINITELY unlawfully posessed and carried) pistol and you fault lawful gun owners?

derp!

25. If the victim of the assault
(that would be the people who were treated to an unprovoked assault by a group of thugs) HAD been armed, think of the money saved on incarceration he would have saved the community by shooting a burgeoning career criminal. Now, sadly, we'll have to wait until the assailant is caught (notice that the cops were unable to arrive in time to prevent anything) committing another crime, creating another victim and, astoundingly, continuing to break laws.

So, pro-ciminal safety folks, how would more laws have prevented this incident? It's already illegal to carry concealed sans permit, description says he looked about 19 or so, so he didn't get it at a gunshop, it's already illegal to pull a gun out to accentuate your argument, as well as being illegal to threaten to kill someone-whether you've got a gun in your hand or not.

The "kid" obviously didn't shoot. In fact, we don't even know he had a gun. Some screwball Tbagger -- who thinks confederate flags are cool (in SC) -- might just be making shit up. Folks do that in SC -- see a group of Black kids and immediately assume they are guilty and a threat.

32. You obviously have never been to SC. Besides, all this is alleged from account of a likely bigot.

In today's society -- where confederate flags were and are the symbol of the KKK and other racist/supremacist groups, not unlike a swastika -- folks don't wear shit like that, legal or not.

And, why do you presume the "kid" isn't an honor roll or average student? He might be the victim of a bigot's lie.

I hope when you are packing, you use a little more judgment before shooting someone who obviously can't be an honor roll student and must be a criminal (in your opinion).

By which I mean, how would this incident reflect on policy concerning the private ownership of firearms and thus be appropriate to this forum?

Hell, by that token, we don't even know the black kid even existed, in which case it would be a bit difficult for one of us to "slaughter" him, wouldn't it?

Given the type, and how easily he pulls out a gun to make his point, it's likely he'll go on to kill an innocent some day.

Killing him now probably saves a life, and saves us having to pay for his lifetime imprisonment.

I have no tolerance for gun crimes.

One girl had a confederate flag bikini, that's all. They're apparently common, I get 240,000 results searching for confederate and rebel flag bikinis. No racist implication on the sites that sell them. Amazon sells them.

A wannabe gangster got upset about it, pulled out a gun and threatened a life.

In my world, he forfeited his life right there.

He's just lucky nobody was equipped to do the right thing at the time.

However, his future victim will not be so lucky.

68. That was in the story
He pulled out a gun and threatened someone.

By the actions of all together, it has the signature of gangs, ganging up on a potential victim, surrounding him, threatening him.

I've had it happen to me.

"confederate flags ain't harmless"

When was the last time one attacked you? Those vicious bikinis!

But to you apparently it's valid to threaten someone's life over one.

"in SC it's a symbol of hatred"

Only to those who perceive it to be so. It's their problem, and doesn't extend to the rights of others. This was just a bikini.

Seriously, if they have a problem with it, they are graciously invited to go fuck themselves.

He should the rest of the world a favor and turn that gun on himself before he hurts someone else with it.

"The allegations may have been hatred too."

Playing the race card a little early, aren't you? Blame the victim, right?

70. I have to agree with Hoyt in this, at least mostly.
Edited on Thu Jun-02-11 10:24 PM by TPaine7
Here's what I read:

"A Rock Hill man says someone threatened him with a gun..."

"Gainey told police..."

"Gainey told officers..."

There is not a shred of corroborating evidence, at least not that I see.

While I agree that the threat described justified potentially lethal force, I would say the same about that woman whose kids were drowned by that "black man." The black drowner was fictional, and so might be this gun wielder be.

Furthermore, a black person who gets upset at the sight of a racist loser flag might not be otherwise criminally inclined, any more than a Jew who is enraged by a swastika bikini. (Of course if the event actually occurred and the gunman was actually a teenager, he is a criminal by definition.)

I've lived in the south, and the racist loser flag is about racism, whether it's the cross-burning KKK variety or the "our ancestors were noble souls, the lynchings, rapes, torture, castrations and systematic dehumanizing of black folks by virtually 100% of the society is a trifle that shouldn't affect anyone's opinion" variety.

It's almost hard to tell which is worse sometimes, at least as a black man.

I realize it was not the national flag, or our flag. But according to the flag code, wearing the flag as apparel is disrespectful. Maybe the point of wearing the confederate bikini was to be disrespectful of it and what it stood for.

44. Explains it
Maybe it is because I grew up in the West (I still think of myself as a Wyomingite living in Florida, not as a Floridian) I don't quite get how the blue/gray thing still going.

48. Well, at least I didn't accept a TBagger's account like you guys were quick to do.

The "blue/grey thing" is that there are still a lot of bigots in the south who think it's funny to throw a confederate flag in people's face. Maybe, you ought to reconsider how quickly you choose to believe the bigot. And, I think a majority of gunners out there (probably not here) are quick as well -- witness the lines at gun stores after Obama was elected.

51. I was concerned about gun rights after I voted for Obama, and I'm black.
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 08:58 PM by TPaine7
I certainly wasn't concerned because of his race; my concern was due to his published statements in his book and his record in Chicago and the Senate.

I know racism is a handy label to use against gun owners, but it doesn't work as a broad brush attack on this point. Sure the sets of "racist" and "gun rights proponent" overlap--so do the sets of "Ford driver" and "KKK member".

It is very rational to think that Obama wants to ban handguns in cities and opposes CCW. HE'S SAID AS MUCH. It is certainly plausible that, had he the power, he would ban handguns and both open and concealed carry nationwide. It is certainly plausible that he would seek to appoint Supreme Court justices that share that ambition. It is not unthinkable that his claims to believe in the Second Amendment means that he accepts that ordinary people have the right to own locked and disassembled rifles and shotguns, but not to load them for self-defense. That was the District of Columbia's law, and Obama supported it.

The bottom line is that some of those people in line were definitely racists. Some were fanatics. And some of them just had a different view of Obama's power than I did, or just wanted to hedge their bets.

Do you seriously think that the thinking of most was as simple as "it's a black president, I need a gun."? Do you think the same thing would have happened had Colin Powell been elected? Do you think it wouldn't have happened if Hillary Clinton had been elected?

I think Clinton would have been a greater concern. She voted to maintain funding for unconstitutional confiscations of guns in emergencies, like Katrina.

That funding for confiscations (Volker Amendment) vote was one of Obama's rare--if not only--correct gun vote(s) in the Senate.

60. Don't know what it's like where you live, but here folks were clear about why they were there.

Personally, I'm proud of Democrats' stand on guns. I just don't think promoting arming more folks is beneficial. With that said, I'm fine with "reasonable" guns in homes. I understand why some might carry -- but, I don't think it should be condoned and, worse, promoted.

62. I prefer to change the party's stand. It is not detrimental.
What are reasonable guns? Is your definition based on function or based on Brady talking points? Condoned absolutely. New Zealand promotes the shooting sports to kids. So does a lot of civilized countries.

Particularly assault styles, like those incorporating a thong or maybe with some see-thru mesh.

Yep, can't have those.

80. Depends what you mean by "upset"
I think it's not abnormal to react negatively to someone displaying one of the various Confederate flags, if the reaction is something in the vein of muttering "racist prick" or "you lost, get over it" and leaving it at that.

83. The racist loser flag is nothing to shoot someone over, that's for sure.
However, very rational people get nonviolently upset over symbols.

Most Americans wouldn't take kindly to a "death to America" sign. Yes, it is and should be protected speech, but it is unpopular for a reason.

People who can't understand the issue are likely either terrorists, anti-American, or not very bright. Similarly, people who can't understand the antipathy of black folks to the racist loser flag or of Jews to swastikas are likely racists themselves or not very bright.

84. One difference
You can't be a non-racist or non-Nazi is you were to wear a swastika. Any one who wears one has an extremist agenda. Not so if you wear a Confederate Flag bikini. If this were 30 years ago no one would think racism, they would just think rebel youth or South (Dukes of Hazzard). However, in the 90's the idiot KKK started flying it and it changed everything.

85. Ah, my friend, the swastika is a religious symbol whose origin was thousands of years before Hitler.
It still has religions uses unrelated to nazism or similar groups.

A rational and informed Jew would not be offended by its use in an Indian temple or religious ceremony (though he might be disturbed by the associations it raised in his mind.)

In a religious ceremony in India it means one thing; as a tattoo on the arm of a white guy from the US or Europe, it almost certainly means something else.

What you think of as a difference is just another similarity.

Most Nazis don't try to pretend that they are practitioners of Jainism to explain their tattoos. Some southern heritage types aren't so honest about the reason for their flag waving, but they are just as transparent.

86. The likely origin of the swastika.
http://abob.libs.uga.edu/bobk/sw/

Encke's comet has a rotational axis that occasionally points to Earth. From a Han dynasty comet atlas there is a comet with a swastika coming from it. The atlas implies that it was seen frequently. It appears that Encke's comet at that time had four jets and produced a pinwheel effect in the skies, much like a giant swastika appearing every three years until the comet boiled away. Such a sign assumed religious signifigance in many cultures.
