GUNS IN THE NEWS - June 9, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, World Net Daily, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

"BIGGS A 17-year-old male was arrested on B Street Monday night after Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force members spotted him carrying a hand gun.
The suspect, not named because of his age, appeared to place the gun in his right front pants pocket as officers approached him.
BINTF commander Keith Krampitz said the youth was nervous during questioning.
When officers detected the object in his pants during a pat-down search and asked him what it was, he reportedly answered "It's a gun." "

10-Year-Old Accused Of Shooting Man With BB Gun

Boy's Family Asked To Move Out Of Complex

POSTED: 8:09 am EDT June 9, 2004
UPDATED: 9:58 am EDT June 9, 2004

DURHAM, N.C. --
Durham police arrested a 10-year-old boy Monday for allegedly shooting a man with a BB gun.

The boy allegedly fired the gun at two landscapers at the Carriage House apartment complex on Monday. Police say he shot one of them at close range in the chest.

"The Mexican guy, I didn't shoot him cause the bullets ran out. I tried to shoot him in the back but it didn't work," the 10-year-old said, describing the incident. "I'm sorry. I didn't really mean it. I thought it was just fake and I was only just playing."

Joe Braun owns the landscaping company the two men worked for and was there when the shooting happened. He said when police arrived, the boy cursed at them and admitted what he had done.

Two women killed in shooting

June 9, 2004, 1:10 AM EDT

Two women were shot dead last night in a dramatic domestic confrontation in the Bronx that was witnessed by at least two children, police said.

Details were sketchy early today, but police said it appears the 30-year-old boyfriend of one of the victims opened fire on his partner and another adult female inside a Schuylerville home where the boyfriend had been staying. The suspect fled after the shooting and was being sought by police.

The 10:35 p.m. double slaying occurred on Throgs Neck Boulevard. Police said one victim was 33 years old. The other's age was not known.

Bronx NYC? ALL firearms are banned in NYC. What good do firearm laws do if nobody obeys them?

When guns are banned, only criminals will have guns.

...in a matter of hours - to NJ and CT in less than an hour. It's very simple to buy a gun in another state and bring it in to the Big Apple.

What good do firearm laws do if nobody obeys them?

Using your "logic", we might as well repeal all the laws against bank robbery and morder, since the laws are on the books and banks still get robbed and people still get killed....

4. Man injured in drive-by shooting (PA)
"Bristol Township police on Tuesday investigated a reported drive-by shooting that injured a 20-year-old man from Bristol.
A male who was riding in the back of a gold Mercury Grand Marquis sedan chased down and shot Brian McDuffie shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday at Weston and Elmhurst avenues in the township's Winder Village neighborhood, police said. McDuffie, who lives in the 600 block of Spruce Street, was hit once in the back of the right leg, police said.
McDuffie told police he was riding his bicycle when the sedan stopped alongside him. Two females sat in front and two males sat in the back. One of the males asked McDuffie if he had any drugs, after which he got out of the car and chased after McDuffie, who dropped his bike and ran before he was hit."

State Police Investigate Shooting

By: David J. Renza June 09, 2004

SEYMOUR -
One optometrist walked into the office of a second optometrist last Friday and, police said, opened fire, leaving the second doctor wounded.

Dr. Daniel A. Kissel subsequently was killed by a police officer who responded to the scene when police said he made a threatening gesture towards the officer.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. June 4 when Dr. Kissel reportedly walked into the Seymour Optometric Center on 25 New Haven Ave. and had a loud discussion with Dr. George Tzepos, who works at the center, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Vance.

Shots were fired and Dr. Tzepos was in critical condition at press time at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Judge John M. Glynn denied separate defense motions to transfer jurisdiction from the adult system to the juvenile justice system for Brian Antonio Wilson and Paul Anthony Wilson, of the 5600 block of Govane Ave. in Govans, because of the nature of the killing and what he said was the lack of evidence that the two would be responsive to rehabilitation in the juvenile system. Funeral held for Oxon Hill High School senior

WASHINGTON (AP) - Funeral services were held Friday for a young man killed after offering to buy a girl a Slurpee at a 7-Eleven store in Suitland, Md.

Mourners gathered at Garden Memorial Presbyterian Church in southeast Washington, D.C. and recalled how 18-year-old Michael Bassett was a popular young man known for making people smile. The Oxon Hill High School senior was beaten and struck by two cars during the incident last Sunday.

Prince George's police have charged 16-year-old Emmanuel McClain with murder although his attorney says McClain played only a minor role in the incident. Police are continuing to search for others who may have been involved.

HE PIZZA KILLERS
A DISTURBING PATTERN

By: Ted Lang

On May 21, 1924, two young men from well-to-do families murdered a teenager. It was on that day that Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb
murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks, supposedly for the ransom the kidnapping would bring. But that motive fails in the light of the
impressive college education both had completed while still teenagers, as well as their elevated economic status. The real motive for the
senseless killing was concluded as being the "thrill" of committing a murder.

A recent and particularly disturbing pattern of thrill killings is becoming evident: it is a pattern that singles out a most vulnerable group of
targeted victims; namely, pizza deliverypersons. In "The Armed Citizen" section of American Rifleman Magazine, the premier monthly
publication of the National Rifle Association, an account of a pizza deliverygirl was reported several years ago. It seems two armed men
robbed her. After running several yards, one robber turned, aimed and fired his pistol at the girl.

The deliverygirl pulled a .357 Magnum revolver from a concealed holster and returned fire, killing the would-be
murderer. She did the right thing initially in assessing that a gunfight and the possible loss of life was not worth
the price of the stolen pizza or the small amount of money taken. And since the robbery was over and the take
not really significant, one can only conclude that the perpetrator intended to kill her for the sheer thrill of it. Had
the robber known the pizza girl was armed, he and his partner would most likely have avoided her. Certainly, he
wouldn’t have shot at her once in the clear.

In order to comply with US copyright laws on "fair use" (and DU rules), you're only supposed to post four paragraphs maximum of a story from another site, with a link that others can follow if they wish to read the entire story.

That's why the other stories on this GITN thread are only four paragraphs long. If you still have time, you should edit your post to comply with the rules.

22. Holsters recalled because strap cause gun to fire accidentally
Ironically, unsafe guns cannot be recalled because the CPSC has no power over the corrupt gun industry....

"WASHINGTON (AP) — A Pennsylvania company is recalling about 3,200 gun holsters because the strap can catch the trigger and cause the weapon to fire accidentally. Eight incidents of accidental firing have been reported, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
The Fobus USA Holster Division of First Samco, of Southampton, Pa., is recalling its Fobus GLT holsters, designed for Series 17 and Series 19 Glock handguns fitted with a laser-sight light. There have been eight reports of guns discharging as they were inserted into the holster. One person injured a finger.
The recall, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, involves about 3,200 units with leather or plastic retention straps less than an inch wide. The holsters are inscribed with "GL 2*EMZ," "FOBUS" and "Made in Israel." They were sold at gun accessory retailers nationwide and on the Fobus Web site between March 2002 and March 2003 for about $40 to $45. "

"Sterling Heights police are expected to announce this evening that Timothy W. Berner appeared to be stalking police officers prior to Friday's fatal shooting of Officer Mark Sawyers.
Police said the implication is that Sawyers was targeted not at random or for personal reasons, but because he was a police officer.
Berner is the lone suspect in Sawyers' slaying and has eluded police for five days. Police said he pulled his 1994 red Camaro along side Sawyers' patrol car in a parking lot at 15 Mile and Van Dyke, fired a shotgun, took the officer's weapon and drove away."
