what actions do you take to ensure that your gun stays safe and secure?
what ways do you teach gun safety to your kids? do you just show them what you were taught, or how to point the front end at whatever you want to die, or do you enroll them in an NRA safety course, or what?

do you store your gun with the safety on, or with a trigger lock, or in a gunsafe?

how do our pro-gun democrats ensure that their weapons wont be a hazard to their families?

i'm just curious.

1. All my models come preinstalled with
common sense. Im speaking of my kids of course. ;) Had to put the older kids in hunter ed, its mandatory now if you want to hunt. They didnt learn much in 12 hours but thats because they already knew most of it.

I keep everything locked in a cabinet, the kids know if they ever want to shoot, all they have to do is ask. My oldest is the only one who could get into it if he chose, but he knows the consequences of doing so.

5. Probably wouldnt
The chance of that happening are very slim, all things considered. Im fairly confident I could handle a situation without a weapon though. But, I am realist. Even with 20+ years in the martial arts, Im still concerned about my family so I keep a good dog and a well secured and lit house. If any criminal would/could get past that and actually make it into my house, I'd be well awake and probably waiting for him with a cup of coffee in one hand and a phone in the other.

Ive only had one encounter in the last 46 years and that was due to my sloppyness. I wont make the same mistake again.

Not everybody keeps guns for protection.

2. I live alone
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 09:28 AM by slackmaster
I'm a divorced empty-nester.

When I was a parent I tried to teach my stepson the valuable lessons about safe gun handling that my stepfather taught me. He had served as a firearms instructor in the Navy.

I taught my stepson that firearms are not toys. I taught him muzzle control, trigger discipline, how to be sure a target is safe, etc. I taught him how to load and unload several types of firearms, and how to ensure that they are clear.

I taught him to treat air-powered guns the same way as firearms.

I also taught him never to point anything that resembles a gun at anyone.

do you store your gun with the safety on, or with a trigger lock, or in a gunsafe?

When I was a parent I kept all firearms locked up in a gun safe (other than when they are in use) just as I do today. Mechanical safeties and trigger locks have only very limited value. They cannot be trusted to keep a gun from firing, and do nothing to prevent its theft.

4. I do not have any kids, but I show my dog where to relieve herself
after I print interesting rhetoric I find amusing on the web. As far as gun safety goes in my house, every room has a gun safely in place to use at any moment.

7. Gun safe
For the most part all my valuable firearms are kept in my gunsafe. I keep a 12 guage and a 1911 out and loaded.

8. Well, unless I'm using it,
it goes into a big-ass safe in the basement. If it isn't there, I'm wearing it.

9. Unloaded inside a gun safe.
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 11:09 AM by Zynx
I'm living at home the summer after college, so this doesn't have anything to do with kids of my own, but my parents (who of course own the house) have dictated there will be no loose firearms in the house.

As far as protecting the house, we've got two large dogs and I keep a spring baton next to my bed just in case as well as an AirSoft SPAS 12 that looks and sounds just like a real pump shotgun.

10. No kids at home...
but all guns that aren't being used are locked in a safe. My bedside gun is in a electronic security box, with a touch pad for fast access.

11. Safety off...
and in its holster. When I take it off the mag is removed, the chamber emptied and locked away. All others have trigger locks. Every week or so, I let the kids handle one of the weapons under supervision to take away the "gee whiz factor."

just daring Janet Reno or any other Commie Democrat to try and take my gun out of my warm living hands!

17. My kids, as young as they are
Can already tell someone all the important facts of gun safety. The only guns of mine that are locked up are my valuable antiques. I keep a small shotgun under the bed. It stays loaded, but has such a stiff cocking mechanism and safety that the kids couldnt hurt themselves. My other home defense weapon is a three foot long sword. I dont own any handguns. Mainly because I am not a great shot with them, no matter how much I practice. My issued sidearm with the Army is a 9mm Berretta. I am proficient with it, but not good enough to use it as a personal defense weapon. Wait, I do have one handgun, but it is a blackpowder revolver, and is too huge to shoot in the house without taking out a wall. The best protection is teaching your kids, and teach them well. I have taken my kids shooting, and hunting more than once. ALthough to be fair, they dont have the concept of being quiet while hunting yet, so it is more to give the animals a sporting chance, lol.

Simply put, it is easy to teach a children about firearm safety. Most homes that have firearms accidents come from parents trying to hide firearms from the kids.....

18. It's funny how a reasonable question like this attracts so little attentio
You get a few reasonable answers and a few smartass ones, but no thread like this has ever erupted into a standard J/PS flamefest.

19. Could be...
that the vast majority of gun owner's are common sense regular folk, who take gun ownership and safety seriously.

20. Yeah, I thought mine was smart ass, but the rhetoric used to
ask a serious question then in the end stating "just being curious" was kind of curious in itself. If the question were presented without the flame to begin with than I would have been serious in my answer. imo. you can beat me with a wet noodle if I went overboard.
:P

21. I think JibJab was being sincere
That must be the default assumption here no matter how many times people have asked similar questions hoping to get an answer they can characterize as anti-progressive.
