Israelis' despair revealed in annual survey
(Title of an article in the Daily Telegraph today). The URL is so long that I don't know how to post it. You can link to it from antiwar.com

Snip: Israelis are in a state of open despair about their country's future, according to a deeply pessimistic opinion poll released yesterday.

Snip: Asked whether their children would enjoy a better future, 73 per cent replied "no". Asked to describe their feelings about the country's situation, 43 per cent said they were in "despair".

The survey also found that 21 per cent of parents believe their children are even more pessimistic than they are. The anguish of young Israelis is evident.

(unsnip)

What a way to start the New Year. Perhaps relying on 5000-year-old dreams and promises is no guarantee of happiness in our turbulent modern world.

Note: its a tricky link to restricted content, don't know how long it
it will work, and it may not work reliably.

3. Does anybody ever read the Peace Now website?
They're an Israeli group for Palestinian rights. Their idea is that this ongoing occupation and suicide bombings is bad for Israel in the long run, and that it's really hurting Israel and its citizens.

You can see their website here.

No, I'm not just hear to sell a political idea. I really don't want Israelis to be in despair anymore than I want Palestinians to be.

4. Both sides are suffering
so why don't they SIT DOWN and talk peace??? Are they stupid, stubborn, or what???

Israel's leaders must be cracking their brains how to get Hamas to disarm WITHOUT giving up the settlements, having refugees return or sharing Jerusalem! You'd think they know that for a peace agreement to succeed it has to be good for both. Stalling isn't going to change that. Dropping a nuclear bomb is also not going to help.

5. It is possible for two sides to be unable to find an accord
That's where we are now.

6. I believe
that an accord is possible. All that's needed is the will, but we're dealing with very stubborn men.
