Abbas: All Palestinians should be given right to return home

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told reporters in Lebanon on Thursday that all Palestinians should be given the right to return home.

The highly contentious notion of a Palestinian "right of return" is one key issues in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians for peace agreement.

"The refugees should have the right of return to their homeland and we are negotiating this with the Israelis. I have to say we are not with permanent settlement of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. We are against permanent resettlement," Abbas told reporters after meeting Lebanese President Michel Suleiman on a visit to Beirut.


Abbas also said he rejects the idea that Palestinian refugees might be forced to stay in Lebanon permanently.

They should be compensated and resettled in the territory that should be a Palestinian state, i.e., Israel should be behind the original 1949 borders.

The occupation is illegal under international law. Period.

yes, I do. Under the geneva conventions, taking land by force is illegal, and that land was taken by force by people who wanted the war and the invasion.

We've talked about this before; the Israeli army was trying to start the war, because they were better armed and fully trained and knew that the war would be short. It was the beginning of the colonization. They should give back Sheba Farms.

If you are given the majority of someone else's country, it behooves you to stay where you're put. Uprooting people, buildings and orchards is not the way to win friends and influence people.

Their leadership wants the land of Israel instead, and prefers misery and poverty to having their own state.

I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion that the Palestinians could have had a state dozens of times when Israel has opposed Palestinian statehood...
