Hamas tried to hijack ambulances during Gaza war
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 02:03 AM by henank
Sidney Morning Herald

PALESTINIAN civilians living in Gaza during the three-week war with Israel have spoken of the challenge of being caught between Hamas and Israeli soldiers as the radical Islamic movement that controls the Gaza strip attempted to hijack ambulances.

Mohammed Shriteh, 30, is an ambulance driver registered with and trained by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

His first day of work in the al-Quds neighbourhood was January 1, the sixth day of the war. "Mostly the war was not as fast or as chaotic as I expected," Mr Shriteh told the Herald. "We would co-ordinate with the Israelis before we pick up patients, because they have all our names, and our IDs, so they would not shoot at us."

Mr Shriteh said the more immediate threat was from Hamas, who would lure the ambulances into the heart of a battle to transport fighters to safety.

8. Alert indeed
Wasn't it supposed to be Big Bad Israel shooting up Poor Innocent Hamas Ambulances?

if they were Hamas ambulances why was Hamas trying to hijack them? Perhaps you revealed more than intended in that statement

the source for the story is hardly unbiased either

Eyad al-Bayary, 32, lost his job as a senior nurse at the Shifa Hospital, the largest in Gaza City, about six months ago because he is closely identified with Fatah, the rival political movement of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Twice last year Mr Bayary was arrested by Hamas, and once he was jailed for six days for flying the Fatah flag above his house in Jabaliya. He now works part-time as an English teacher at al-Azhar University.

19. Excuses and denials?
The article stated that the man interviewed has a bad history with Hamas hardly a denial or excuse just a fact

Anything to explain away Hamas' actions.

4. You know, Aegis...
This is not a binary situation. Just because someone supports Palestinians does not mean they support Hamas, just as one can support Israelis without supporting the government of Israel.

It must pain you to think about that, though.

5. You know, I expected such blather from you (or another like you).
So few things surprise me with posters like you. So predictable.

"...just as one can support Israelis without supporting the government of Israel."

Think on that for a moment. Reread the post to which I replied. Then, think some more. Then...think a little more and maybe you will reach an answer to the unasked question.

6. Thhink somemore there Aegis
one can indeed support Israelis without supporting the Israeli government but continue to live in your paranoid little world.

The poster said fuck Hamas and fuck Israel the two main components in the suffering experienced in Gaza so perhaps you should think or don't

7. Well, I was responding to you, not who you were responding to
Perhaps if there were a Palestinian state, though, she would have said "Fuck Palestine and Fuck Israel"

Sadly, someone's keeping there from being such a nation.

9. Oh, so you failed.
Again, expected.

"Sadly, someone's keeping there from being such a nation."

Talk about "black/white" thinking. Again, not unexpected at all.

12. Can you argue that someone isn't?
Please do explain how the lack of a Palestinian nation is a simple fact of physics or something, Aegis. Someone is responsible. Please refute this.

13. Again, no real response.
You see it in black/white terms. Someone must be responsible.

Well, chulanowa, this is basically called a straw man: "Please do explain how the lack of a Palestinian nation is a simple fact of physics or something." Therefore, the rest of your sad little post falls under the same situation: logical fallacy.

14. Well, technically my statement is true
The concept of "state" is entirely human in nature and design. It is not natural, such as the concept of gravity, or entropy within a closed system. The whole premise of a nation-state is conceived of and furthered by human thought and action. Thus when a conceived state fails to materialize, the fault must lie somewhere within the human species.

It's someone's (or several someones') fault.

Unless I suppose you're going to make the argument that it's the will of god, which could be possible I suppose. As a sapient entity though, god is still a "someone"...

"It's someone's (or several someones') fault."

Of course that defeats your whole "black/white" thinking.

You demonstrate the 'black/white' thinking very well with your posts in this thread. Must pain you to think you'd have to actually re-read something you wrote because it could be used to explain how your posts are simplistic, sad, moronic, and painfully ill-informed when it comes to Israel.

23. Well, let's be honest here... I know that's hard work for you, but like I said, try
If I typed something you found to be "black and white thinking" and am now asking you where I have done so, then clearly I'm not perceiving it as such, and you're going to have to explain to me when and why it appears that way to you.

I think that, compared to many posters here, on both sides, I have a pretty multicolored approach to the situation. I've played on both teams for the express purpose of knowing where each is coming from, after all.

Do you know what "black/white" thinking is? If so, then it sould be very easy for you to pinpoint the issue. If, however, you don't know what 'b/w' thinking is, well, then I can see where the problem is (among the others).

32. the unknown scenarios...
just for those who are a bit curious:

israel had a center for taking calls from Palestinians in gaza.......(the number on the leaflets dropped)....they calls would consist of a variety of needs from the sick and wounded to the trapped and no food.

From this center would start a coordination between the Palestinian civilians, the Palestinian emergency services and the IDF, whether it would be to tell the ambulance drivers where to go, the safe routes to take and warn the IDF forces in the area of the passing ambulances if they were going near the fighting (as far as i know there was no communication with hamas). At times they would have to wait until the fighting died down before continuing.....

However, like this series, its pretty much one or two person's word over it. I want to recall some video from a while back though. Anyone else remember some and what it showed?
