U.N. Palestinian Rights Official Posts Anti-Semitic Cartoon
The United Nations Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur on Palestinian rights is being criticized for re-posting an anti-Semitic cartoon on his personal blog.

The cartoon, posted by Richard Falk, depicts a dog wearing a shirt labeled “USA” and a yarmulke marked with a Star of David devouring a bloody human carcass. Lady Justice stands by blindfolded, holding the dog’s leash as it urinates on her foot.

The Geneva-based U.N. Watch, which is affiliated with the American Jewish Committee, sent a letter to Navi Pillay, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, urging her to condemn Falk’s action. U.N. Watch’s executive director, Hillel Neuer, wrote that the cartoon “is manifestly anti-Semitic and, before a worldwide Internet audience, incites hatred against Jews as well as against Americans.”

2. He posted an apology on his blog
Excerpt:

Returning to the cartoon, I regret my carelessness, and apologize for any unintended hurt and outrage caused thereby. At the same time, I am quite aware that many of the messages were motivated to discredit me due to my views of Israeli policies and behavior.

Interesting "discussion" about it on his blog as well.

Cartoon itself has since been taken down but can be easily Googled.

9. I don't know what's worse
The fact that he posted an anti-semitic cartoon on his website or the fact that he now claims he is not able to recognize blatant anti-semitic themes in cartoons.

3. Ha Ha
Last year, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon rebuked Falk for a blog post in which he questioned the notion that American government officials had no foreknowledge of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

4. This guys a real prize.
The American ambassador to the U.N., Susan Rice, responded to that incident by calling for Falk to be removed from his U.N. post.

6. Ambassador Donahoe Calls for the Resignation of Special Rapporteur Falk
I am repulsed by the recent cartoon posting to the personal blog written by Richard Falk, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on “the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.”

Mr. Falk’s continued comments and postings to his personal blog are deeply offensive, and I condemn them in the strongest terms. I am registering a strong protest with the UN on behalf of the United States. The United States has often been critical of Mr. Falk’s approach to his mandate, including his one-sided and politicized view of situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. We hope that he will resign, recognizing that his continued status as a UN mandate holder is a blight on the UN system.

The United States is deeply committed to the cause of human rights. Mr. Falk’s continued offensive postings and biased reporting does nothing to further the human rights of Palestinians or Israelis, nor anything to advance peace in the region.

11. Obama administration, Jewish groups, to U.N.: Sack Falk
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Obama administration, joined by U.S. Jewish groups, called for the United Nations to dismiss Richard Falk, its rapporteur on Palestinian rights, after he posted an anti-Semitic cartoon on his blog.

"I am deeply disturbed that once again U.N. Special Rapporteur Richard Falk has used his personal blog to publish abhorrent material," Joseph Torsella, the U.S. representative for management and reform to the United Nations, said in a statement on Friday. "His shameful and outrageous behavior is an embarrassment to the United Nations. Someone who publishes such vicious images has no place in the U.N. system."
