Palestinians Seeking Statehood at UN May Get Same Rights as Pope
<snip>

"Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas won’t walk away from the United Nations General Assembly this month with the sought-after statehood. More likely, he’ll get parity with the world’s smallest state led by Pope Benedict XVI.

Support for the upgrade in Palestinian status at the UN from “entity” to “non-member state” is likely if the matter is brought to a vote in the 193-member assembly, where a two- thirds majority, or 129 votes, is required.

Gaining equality with the only sovereign state that isn’t a UN member, the Holy See, may be more than symbolic. It may allow the Palestinian Authority to sign treaties such as the Rome Statute that set up the International Criminal Court, according to European diplomats speaking on condition of anonymity. Access to the court in The Hague may provide legal cover for the Palestinian Authority to seek war-crimes prosecutions of Israelis for actions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the European diplomats said."

Israelis could face trial in The Hague if Palestinian statehood recognized at UN, experts warn

According to the statute of the court, the direct or indirect transfer of an occupier’s population into occupied territory constitutes a war crime.

1. They deserve a lot more recognition
Being an actual people in need of an actual country. Why does the Pope deserve more clout at the UN than the Dalai Lama or the many leaders of various Protestant churches or any Muslim or Jewish leaders?

5. Dont forget that they will get to parade around with a cool smoking purse.......This reminds me of a
quote on religion by one of the great thinkers of our time.

“I'm sickened by all religions. Religion has divided people. I don't think there's any difference between the pope wearing a large hat and parading around with a smoking purse and an African painting his face white and praying to a rock.”-Howard Stern

Here’s what happens when you die — you sit in a box and get eaten by worms. I promise you that when you die, nothing cool happens.

6. Then again, Dick, I actually think Palestinians SHOULD have rights...unlike you.
We both know that Palestinians can only have rights in an independent Palestinian state...they can't have any at all under the Occupation(the fact that they have none now under the status quo proves it).

The fact that I made fun of the headline doesn't mean I agree with your right-wing defense of the existing oppression.

7. You call everyone who disagrees with you here on DU 'right wing'

Overwhelmingly they support the Democratic Party principles of the Democratic Party (especially where they stand on Israel)

That is a real bad habit of yours, (and making up stuff) especially since it is the prevailing view of the Democratic Party !!

Meanwhile people supporting Hamas and the many Homophobes (usually the same people) are far more right wing than anyone YOU label right wing !!

8. I don't support Hamas, and Hamas isn't the issue.

Also, I'm for a two-state solution(which can only be workable if Palestinians get the entire West Bank, without settlements to break up its contiguity, since non-contiguous states are doomed to failure). I'm not an anti-Zionist. It's just that I don't believe that Israel as a country is the innocent victim in this dispute OR that Palestinians are Jew-hating monsters. Both sides have done right, and wrong, and both nationalities are mainly made up of decent human beings.

The best way to fight Hamas is to end the Occupation and actually let the people of Palestine HAVE self-determination. That is also the best way to protect LGBT rights(constantly braying about Israeli being better on this serves no purpose, and puts Palestinian LGBT people at risk of being called collaborators if anyone finds out their sexuality). Also, you can't assume that all LGBT people take Israel's side against the Palestinians...even in Israel. Does the name Ezra Nawi mean anything to you? If not, you should look him up and see what he stands for.

And you, personally, DO sound right-wing on this issue because of your utter disdain of Palestinians and your gleeful support of everything the right-wing Israeli government does to make their lives worse. And you mock anyone who shows any sympathy towards Palestinians and the conditions they are made to live under, none of which are necessary for Israel's security or survival.

Have you EVER spoken against the Occupation? OR the settlements? Have you ever shown any sympathy towards Palestinians who have been subjected to brutality by the IDF? If you have, I've never seen that in this thread.

It's right-wing to defend the Occupation. It's right-wing to oppose the creation of a Palestinian state(since it goes without saying that Palestinians can never have freedom or any hope until it ends.) It's right-wing to say the settlements are no big deal. OK?

There can't be a progressive case for any of those things.

10. I made no insults
I simply outlined his positions-positions which you apparently share. Perhaps if Mr. Dastardly and I met, we'd have a beer and a nice chat. I just disagree with him on these issues.

But if you really don't want to respond to me, you're free to put me on "ignore".

If you do, you might actually try making a coherent case for some position sometime...rather than just doing one-liner drive-by attacks on people.

There's no way your posts are helpful to the Israeli cause.
