One Year Since the Killing of Rachel Corrie
Observing the one-year anniversary of the killing of Rachel Corrie, Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) today renewed its call for an independent investigation of her death. Corrie, a US citizen, was apparently trying to stop the demolition of a Palestinian building in the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip when an Israeli army bulldozer ran her over, crushing her to death.

Amnesty International believes prior investigations -- conducted by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) -- failed to resolve contradictions between the official IDF position and eyewitness testimonies. While the US government has assisted in the investigations into cases of US citizens killed by Palestinian armed groups, it has failed to do so in Corrie's case, raising the appearance of a double standard.

"As Rachel Corrie was an American citizen, the US government has a particular responsibility to ensure a thorough, proper and impartial investigation," said Krista Riddley, AIUSA's Advocacy Director for the Middle East. "When President Bush meets with Prime Minister Sharon later this month, he ought to make clear that the evidence demands proper independent investigation with the assistance of US law enforcement agencies."

Amnesty International urged members of the US House of Representatives to join 56 of their colleagues in supporting House Concurrent Resolution 111, which calls on the US government to undertake a "full, fair and expeditious investigation" into Rachel's death...

14. You should go post that url in GD. It's not an IP issue pizzaidf.org

And think what a triumph for Team Sharon. We can't mourn Rachel in the living room, but you can send thousands of people to buy her murderers pizza and ice cream. And get a US tax deduction!

Go flaunt it.

And you talk of us generalizing Palestinians...
One young women, killed in a tragic accident by a bulldozer driver. That's wasn't murder - why would Israel want to murder Corrie? But you go on, saying that the entire IDF "murdered" her.

Wonder what the IDF like on their pizza...

16. if a suicide bomber belonging to Hamas
kills a bunch of people, would you have a problem saying "Hamas did it"?

17. Here's the difference:
Hamas exists primarily to attack Israelis and those associated with them. Therefore, when a Hamas terrorist attacks a target, we can say "Hamas did it" because a Hamas militant performed the act with the knowledge and approval of Hamas leaders in accordance with their stated aims.

In the Rachel Corrie incident, however, a young women was killed, most likely a tragic accident. Even if you believe the death was intentional, then one cannot say "the IDF and the Israeli government did it" because this action was not committed with the approval of IDF leaders or in accordance with their stated aims.

18. I haven't seen any indication of disapproval. And their aims are stated

in cemeteries all over Palestine. Many of the graves are very small.

19. The Israeli goal is to eliminate terrorism, not kill Palestinians.

How they do that job and whether they go about doing it well are points of debate, but their aims are not.

Never thought we would agree on such a basic premise.

By the way, the IDF mission statement says:

"IDF soldiers will not use their weapons and force to harm human beings who are not combatants or prisoners of war, and will do all in their power to avoid causing harm to their lives, bodies, dignity and property."

29. People are entitled to believe what they want.
They can believe the Earth is flat. They can believe Bush is a 'compassionate conservative'. They can believe NASA faked the moon landing. They can believe Sharon is a man of peace.
