Abbas pledges to do 'utmost' to stop Palestinian rocket attacks
Edited on Sun Jul-17-05 07:26 PM by newyorican
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas pledged Sunday to do all he can to stop rocket and mortar attacks by Palestinian militants against Israeli settlements in Gaza and towns just outside.

Talking to Palestinian reporters at his Gaza City office, Abbas said, "We are determined to stop the launching of the homemade rockets, whatever the price. We are going to do our utmost to stop these rockets. I cannot promise how much time it will take me".

Militants have fired more than 100 rockets and mortars at Gaza settlements and the western Negev town of Sderot in the last four days, part of an escalation in violence that has endangered a five-month truce.

Abbas said he has "confirmation" that Israel wants to invade Gaza. "The Americans told us that there is an Israeli intention," he said, warning, "If this happens, this will sabotage everything."

------------------------------------------

Key words in 4th paragraph: Israeli intention - sabotage everything.
An invasion of Gaza at this point will prove, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that "disengagement" = yet another stalling tactic.

It's obvious that the Palestinian extremists are interested in derailing any disengagement. The reasoning is simple, armed struggle and continued occupation makes them stronger even as it weakens the overall position and prospects for any peaceful resolution.

The only that appear to really want peace are the powerless, everyday people on both side that are caught in the crossfire.

israel wants to invade Gaza.

er ar...hmmm.....gosh seems to me israeli already invaded Gaza.....israel already is in gaza...israel, without any negotiation decided to leave Gaza

so perhaps someone can help me understand why we want to "invade" a place where we already are?...(maybe i never was in gaza city, jebalia, shati, rafah...it was all an illusion....i was never really there)

newyorican..you seem to understand it.....please enlighten me......

2. I don't buy anything...
anyone is trying sell in this matter. I believe the qualifier, "if", gives my statement a somewhat different meaning than what you've deduced. Whether your leap of logic is deliberate or not, I'll leave for you to know and others to find out.

From your statement I'd guess all of those troops are massing for a boy scout jamboree.

I thought troops massed for action, not to sing kumbaya.

3. the evil israelis......
i was just wondering how we can invade a place we are already in....we've been going in an out of gaza as we wish for years now...BUT NOW we want to invade.....

i just find it amazing how even in leaving gaza we seem to have some evil plan involved. Since its pretty hard to find one, there is this tops turvy logic that says we're going to invade....except that were ready there.

as far as the masses of troops involved (psst....-they have to be there just in case for the far flung scenario that the palestenanian just might shoot some rockets and mortors at the masses of people and vehicles that will be in the settlements during moving day.....

but i'm sure they wont....because moving out of gaza is a good thing, and they wouldnt want the world nor their chearleaders to condem then for that now would we?......

4. I think your argument...
is with the author(s) of the article. It's from those crazy guys at Ha'aretz. They even let you leave feedback on the same page, so go for it.

But feel free to rail against the messenger. A tried and true I/P tradition. My most insincere apologies for bringing a perspective to your attention that upsets the applecart of your reality.

5. my argument.....
is with even the presentation of such an article....the original article in the paper and what abbas said is "newsworthy" in that the he said it...other than that I find it complete crap.

but yes i did have an immediate gut reaction to your putting it here and contributed it to you....that was probably out of line.....

It was your "bolding" of the text that got to me...
