"THE SITE; Engineers Have a Culprit in the Strange Collapse of 7 World Trade Center: Diesel Fuel

Almost lost in the chaos of the collapse of the World Trade Center is a mystery that under normal circumstances would probably have captured the attention of the city and the world. That mystery is the collapse of a nearby 47-story, two-million-square-foot building seven hours after flaming debris from the towers rained down on it, igniting what became an out-of-control fire. ".................

......."But that would not explain steel members in the debris pile that appear to have been partly evaporated in extraordinarily high temperatures, Dr. Barnett said."

1. More quotes from that article
http://whywtc7fell.info/misinfo/aeppt97/03031.html
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E02E3DE143DF93AA15752C1A9679C8B63

With the collapse of both towers by 10:30 a.m., larger pieces of the twin towers had smashed parts of 7 World Trade and set whole clusters of floors ablaze. An hour later, the Fire Department was forced to abandon its last efforts to save the building as it burned like a giant torch. It fell in the late afternoon, hampering rescue efforts and hurling its beams into the ground like red-hot spears.

...Falling debris also caused major structural damage to the building, which soon began burning on multiple floors, said Francis X. Gribbon, a spokesman for the Fire Department. By 11:30 a.m., the fire commander in charge of that area, Assistant Chief Frank Fellini, ordered firefighters away from it for safety reasons.

A combination of an uncontrolled fire and the structural damage might have been able to bring the building down, some engineers said. But that would not explain steel members in the debris pile that appear to have been partly evaporated in extraordinarily high temperatures, Dr. Barnett said.

"Any structure anywhere in the world, if you put it in these conditions, it will not stand," Mr. Marcus said. "The buildings are not designed to be a torch."

In for a penny, in for a pound, wildbill.

2. WTC 7 and the "evaporated" steel?
Edited on Tue Jul-08-08 07:06 AM by Diane_nyc
Of course, as we now know, NIST and others have ruled out the diesel tanks as a major culprit. Ditto for the south side structural damage. It now blames an ordinary office fire on east side of the 12th floor.

It will be interesting to see what the final NIST report on WTC 7 has to say, if anything, about this, from http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E02E3DE143DF93AA15752C1A9679C8B63">the New York Times article of November 29, 2001:

......."But that would not explain steel members in the debris pile that appear to have been partly evaporated in extraordinarily high temperatures, Dr. Barnett said."

Perhaps there was just something stored somewhere in the building that just happened to burn at an extremely high temperature, but it would be interesting to know what that stuff was.

5. The evaporated steel beam shows up in the new BBC documentary.
Edited on Tue Jul-08-08 03:50 PM by boloboffin
I know. You can't watch streaming video.

But the piece is at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. They had a scientist from there with the piece of steel on his desk. He had done extensive tests on it, and found that it was evaporated because of conditions under the Pile. All the elements that contributed to the evaporated steel were under the Pile. There's no mystery about this piece whatsoever.
