The Thing In The Attic
Conservative blathering about Mary Cheney is due to their twisted mindset. They tolerate Cheney being a part of the Bush team, despite his having an openly lesbian daughter, because he's a dirtbag who gives them what they want. It's like some gothic novel where a well-to-do family has a dark secret, i.e. a crazy sister or a misformed relative who is locked in the attic. The parties can go on downstairs, and everyone in attendance pretends that "the thing in the attic" doesn't exist. If it starts to howl they'll simply talk louder so as to drown it out, to avoid having to face the facts. Conservatives are outraged by Kerry's mentioning what is a matter of public record simply because he has managed to raise an issue that they'd just as soon ignore. Mary Cheney is an embarrassment to conservatives because they believe that what she is, is something that should be embarrassing. Even her own parents have bought into it. It's a topic they want to avoid, which is why Cheney himself sidestepped the issue in his debate with Edwards. Thus the outrage over Kerry's supposedly tawdry statements reveals the intolerance and prejudice that is prevalent amongst conservatives.
