Who's exploiting Mary? Why, the GOP, of course!

The Dems really need to push back on this. The fact is, the Cheneys have been very selective when it comes to expressing their "outrage" towards political discussion involving their daughter. When a member of their own party, Alan Keyes, slandered Mary as a selfish hedonist, the Cheneys didn't utter a peep. When Edwards mentioned Mary, Dick Cheney thanked him for the kind words. When Kerry mentioned Mary in an equally positive context -- in effect, defending Mary and all other gays and lesbians against the ingorance of those who consider homosexuality a mere "lifestyle choice" -- the Cheneys suddenly went ballistic.

And what was their complaint? Their complain was that mentioning Mary was "out of bounds." But Dick Cheney himself was the first people to mention Mary in the campaign. Apparently it's ok for the Republicans to use Mary for their own political purposes. And clearly anyone who watched that debate and was unfamiliar with the fact that she's a lesbian must have been living in a hole for the past month.

But the most damning fact is, that if the Cheneys were truly concerned about keeping Mary out of the limelight, they would have simply kept their mouths shut and let the moment pass. Instead, they keep waving her name around like a bloody flag. As a result of their feigned outrate, Mary has gotten ten times the attention she would otherwise have gotten. So their very actions run counter to the concern that profess for their daughter.

In short, the Cheney's are hypocrites. They are shameless hypocrites. And they clearly have contempt for the American public, which they obviously believe is far too stupid to actually detect this hypocrisy.

3. What an excellent summary of the issue. Problem is...

... the media isn't allowing your viewpoint to be heard. Three of the nightly news programs (NBC, ABC, Dobbs@CNN) all played-up the Cheney's outrage -- to the exclusion of other hugely more relevant debate issues (including Bush's Osama lie).

The media have so far been the perfect dupes for BC-04. Everyone needs to email the media, and demand that they report the news -- and not diversionary right-wing talking points.

But you know what? It's really a non-issue and a non-starter. It's ALL they got against Kerry after three debates?? Losers. The global test was much worse.

9. I was watching television earlier this evening when the subject of Mary

Cheney's lesbianism and Kerry's use of it to illustrate a point in the presidential presentation last night came up, together with a clip of lynn cheney calling kerry an evil man (she may have said 'this is not a good man') for his having used mary cheney to illustrate his point. the thought that immediately came up for me on listening to lynn cheney was, "why are you calling kerry a bad or evil man? he has not slandered your daughter. He has pointed out to a truth about your daughter. Are you ashamed of your daughter and must hide that shame by calling kerry a no good, or a bad man?" I really wonder, is lynn cheney ashamed of her daughter mary.

Why did Dick and Lynne have to go PUBLIC at the Republican Convention to explain they love Mary. Maybe since the Log Cabin Republicans were threatening to pull their support from Bush/Cheney, were the Cheneys USING Mary to win back millions of gay voters? When the Cheney's use Mary it's okay, I guess.

Mary was "outed" in the 90's by the right wing Coors beer family when they hired her as their gay liaison to break the gay boycott of their beer in the nation's gay bars. Her lesbianism was hinted in 2000 in the Lieberman debate, where Dick seemed to accept gay marriage...."leave it to the states" before he FLIP-FLOPPED to support the Bush Marriage Amendment.
