Bob Elderkin, Alan Lackey and Stan Rauch would appear to be sure bets for President Bush on Nov. 2: they're avid hunters, part of a 38 million-plus, conservative-leaning group that is strong on gun rights.
But the three, who voted for Bush in 2000, say he won't get their vote this time around because of his environmental policies.
"I can't vote for Bush knowing what it's going to be like the next four years," said Elderkin, a retired Bureau of Land Management employee in western Colorado, where natural-gas drilling is booming. "With (Democrat) John Kerry, it's an unknown. As far as Bush goes, it's going to be Katie-bar-the- door."
Lackey, of Raton, N.M., and Rauch, of Victor, Mont., are angry about the administration's proposal to allow logging and new roads on 58 million acres of national forest land that were declared off-limits by a Clinton-era rule, which is being challenged in court.
