1. Thats great!!!

Why do we need to see her all the time?

She has a life, and a medical practice.

Does this matter to anyone?

It is unprecedented for the spouse of a presidential candidate to be virtually invisible. It is seen as odd by most people. I would think even Dean supporters would stop buying his propaganda about her absence. So, she's a doctor, so she doesn't appear ANYWHERE for ANYTHING? That's just weird. By the way, this probably belongs in the campaign GD.

16. I totally disagree
Its their marriage and their lives. She doesn't want to campaign. She doesn't want to be famous. She would rather practice medicine. That is totally her right.

Should we ask Bill Bennet or Dr. Laura's opinion on what the Dean marriage should look like?

23. It's unprecendented for VP's to be virtually invisible too.
Dean said he didn't want his wife to become a prop for the campaign. I really like that.

57. Hattie Babbit
Actually Hattie did come to my place of employment in Des Moines, shortly before the 1988 primaries and talked to some of us. And the day after at least two of them told me that they voted for him. She was an extremely gracious lady and I was honored to know both of them. Thanks for reminding me of those long ago days.

9. Dean announced very early that his wife agreed that she would not
campaign. Can't remember the reason - but it was reasonable - children?

Where Mrs. Sharpton? Mrs. Edwards? Are they traveling with their spouses - assuming they're married.

'They' are worried...quite worried. If it gets worse for Resident Well-oiled, it is going to get very ugly even before one is selected.

It was fine when he first started. But at this point, it's getting a little strange. Neither his wife or his kids appear with him, EVER. He even had his mom and brother at that event Saturday. It's like he even recognizes that it's a little odd not to have your family support you somewhere along the line. I honestly don't understand it. It would seem like somebody could appear even once or twice a month. Nobody is that busy.

13. Okey dokey. And her husband doesn't need her? Or Democratic voters
don't need to know her?

Elizabeth Edwards has been a gifted surrogate for John Edwards. She has pre-school children at home, but comes out on the trail - and brings the kids - as much as she can.

She's an asset. I'd love to see that family in the White House.

And Edwards will probably be my candidate. Mrs. Edwards does seem like a wonderful person, but Dr. Steinberg-Dean cares for her patients. As a person with multiple medical problems, I'm glad she's sticking with her practice. I hate seeing fill-ins!

It's a non-issue.

When Dr.Steinberg and Dr.Dean started their medical practice together, they realized that having two Dr.Deans in the same medical practice was too confusing. Outside her practice she uses her married name.

It wouldn't surprise me if Drudge isn't highlighting both Mrs. Dean's Hillary-like use of her maiden name, and her Jewish roots. "Slime," indeed. I'm afraid all our candidates are in for this press abuse, when/if they emerge from the pack.

89. That's so silly -
what if the man isn't married? You then know him less?

All part of the myth and fairy tale of marriage in America. The White Knight Syndrome. Marriage as rescue from a cold cruel world. Oh, thank you for rescuing me sire! I will cook your food, clean your house, wait by the fire for you to come home! I will forsake all my interests and your aspirations shall become mine! Give me a break.

The best marriages, the ones that work, involve 2 people with similar interests who are not joined at the hip.

I am so impressed with this woman.

Does anyone remember how conservative Republicans use to complain about Hillary Clinton taking too much interest in politics when she was First Lady? They asked "who elected her?" They should admire Steinberg as the ideal First Lady. After all, she is only interested in her practice and not interested in interfering.

52. Just very odd.....

This isn't MATT DRUDGE....this is the New York Times. Drudge just reported the story. Now....this is just my opinion of course, but I think the posts in this thread show how out of the mainstream most of this board really is. This is too bizarre for most people in this country - it just is - no matter how one attempts to spin it. If Dean really thinks he can get to the White House without the people knowing the person he is going to share it with.....just ain't gonna happen. Many people are just going to continue to wonder about a relationship where the wife is "too busy" to appear with her husband ANYWHERE as he campaigns for President of the United States(!)..... We're not talking about the city council here. I may be all wrong, but I think most people are going to want to know the person that will share his pillow each night. I still think it's just a bit.....I can't think of another word but....weird. That I am in the position of having to defend the position that the country should "know" the potential first lady shows how things have (I guess) reallly changed. Or, I might just be right.

90. Wrong -
this is bizarre only to right-wing fundie types. You're the one who's out of step if you think that Americans are going to resent a strong, accomplished woman. Look at Hillary Clinton - all freeper hysteria aside, after her two terms as First Lady, she went on to be elected Senator.

Where was pickles during bunkerboy's campaign? She was hardly ever seen either!

Only see her a few times a year now.

Who cares except those that hate Dean?

BFD. Non-isssue.

She's a valuable contributing member of society, last time I checked.

Can't say that about crash cart laura or her awol whistle ass hubbie.

And doctors don't seem to have too much spare time, if my over 51 years of experience, and others, can bear witness!

55. Looking for the Mercedes Mrs Clark lost
along with hundreds of USAREUR soldiers who were sent to scour for this vehicle. lost during unauthorized use.

====
Was it because Clark's $120,000 U.S. Army Mercedes -- with a reported highly classified radio system aboard -- was car-jacked while his wife used it as a personal vehicle to drive to the golf course?

Limo-driving Eurocrats targeted by international carjacking gang
By Stephen Castle in Brussels
29 April 2001

Even General Wesley Clark , Nato's former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, had the embarrassment of losing his armour-plated limousine, although the car, stolen when unoccupied at a golf course, was recovered within 24 hours.

Military wifes are NOT entitled to use these official cars (which come equipped with Chauffer and STU-3's) but some of them think that well, rules are for little people and use these tax-payed cars to go from hair-appointment to comissary to whatever. Very sad. Shades of Nancy Reagan.

Not even a Dean supporter but damn this is over the line!! Attacking an independent woman who doesn't think her worth is her husband's rank!

56. I don't think the OP was "attacking" Mrs. Dean, Tinoire
But your attack on Mrs. Clark is duly noted.

I've seen the many threads against Dr. Steinberg right here at DU- you think people are blind? You think people don't see these under-handed attempts to imply that Dean can't be a viable candidate because his wife has an independent career? Please!

Just nipping this shit in the bud as is always my pleasure :)

66. Please note that this thread was started by a Dean supporter.
and if there are any Clark supporters participating in the bashing they should be ashamed of themselves.

Au contraire, I'd say it's reached its nadir. Except that I have a feeling that I'm being optomistic. Every time you think they can't go any lower, they do. :eyes:

67. dick cheney ...
I just saw on CBS News tonight that Dickie Boy is actually NOT in his undisclosed location anymore. He's out raising money. Something like 78 percent of his appearances are for fundraising ... and he never allows the press or the groundlings of the public anywhere near him when he makes these appearances. He won't speak to anyone but fatcats with deep pockets. This has been going on for weeks.

THAT's where Dick is. The dick.

I respect Mrs. Dean for keeping her career and not following Dean around. It is her choice and perogative to do so and I respect that.

79. C-span's been showing her picture all morning
in some newspaper as she was watching Howard in a debate. Howard said she will be doing a few events in the future and she will move her practice to Washington when he wins the election. That will be SO COOL to have two married doctors who care about helping people in the Whitehouse!

80. She should be seen
It is weird for a candidate's wife (if he has one) to be entirely absent from the most important effort in her husband's life. See the NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/13/politics/campaigns/13JUDY.html
I believe it will hurt him in the general election.

It's so transparent it's frightening. The stop Dean movement is in initial stages. I think it will get worse in the next week.

Nasty nasty nasty.

93. Yes, it will get even uglier from here. Judy Dean will, unfortunately,
be a subject of many smears. And most unfortunate of all, some of it will come from Democrats. Very, very sad.

92. I like Howard Dean's wife
She's a brilliant, independent woman with a meaningful career who is deeply supportive of her husband but follows her own path in life.

She's a no-frills, sincere woman who wears running shoes and who doesn't feel compelled to remold herself in anybody else's image.

It speaks volumes for Howard Dean that he and his wife are obviously deeply committed but give each other the personal freedom to pursue individual dreams.
