Team Dean NASCAR Racing!
The primary goal of Team Dean Racing is twofold. This organization would like to both educate the fans on the views and positions of Howard Dean and would also like to encourage those race fans who do not normally vote, into voting for the first time in 2004.

All Howard Dean supporters are encouraged to volunteer to help at upcoming events in conjunction with NASCAR events throughout the country.

The Team Dean Racing No. 84 Chevrolet will be driven by Busch Series veteran and Long Island, New York native Brian Weber.

1. Need to be sure if the car doesn't come in first place that it doesn't
hurt the campaign.

2. Rolling end-over-end flaming down backstretch would be worse.
Dean definitely has an interest in ensuring the Dean car doesn't crash-and-burn.

3. crashing is OK in nascsar
you get more screen time, that's what counts.they have people who watch the races to determine how much time (in seconds) the sponsor's,or candidate's in this case, name is visible.that's how they decide how much to charge for different segments (hood, quarter panel, roof etc.) coming in LAST is what you don't want to do.

I'm quite certain I wasn't the only one to encourage the Dean campaign to do this, but it's great that they are!

That's pretty ballsy, IMO.

Did the Dean campaign do this, or was this something that supporters did?

11. Yes, it's for real
and Dean is definitely ballsy. I'm sure some supporters advised Dean to do this, and since he listens to what his supporters say, he clearly took their advice and is supporting it. I'm not sure if the campaign itself is paying for it or if supporters are. But THIS is the way to get that NASCAR vote. It's not just idle talk, it's actually going to bring MORE NASCAR fans to races just to see that car and cheer for it. It's brilliant, IMO.

Therein lies the risk. Going after yellow and red lights. We'll see how it works, since it didn't work for the New Democrats.

30. wow, howrd dean brings unity to my family
my hubby and son are nascar nuts. i think it is an insane waste of petroleum and money. every time they go to the races, i say "how many poor farmers could feed their families with all that horsepower?" but howard has brought us together. i'll check out the schedule, to see if they are in the chicago area. it is a brilliant political move.

33. This may shock you, but that's about a 5 million investment
The upkeep and movement of a large nascar team costs about that much for half a season, with no victories or top 10 finishes.

or are they just the primary sponsor?

Looks like the car has more small sponsor decals... so DFA isn;t the only sponsor for the car.

39. Oh well, goodluck then. Doesn't this violate campaign finance laws then.
Isn't there some rule that an expense that promotes a candidate is assumed to be a donation to the candidate. Given the very high cost of racing, I wonder if enough supporters will be able to give what they have left in the 2000 limit to afford this expense without violating the soft money rules.
