Edwards Supports Jesse Jackson SC March against Goose Creek SB!
EDWARDS SUPPORTS N. CHARLESTON MARCH
(12/17/03) U.S. Sen. John Edwards voiced support Wednesday for a march led this week in North Charleston, S.C., by the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

A reported 400 marchers turned out Tuesday to protest a recent drug raid at a high school in Goose Creek and a shooting death by North Charleston police officers of a mentally ill black man suspected of stealing lunch meat.

"I want to be a president that leads America to a place that this generation of children does not have to march for equality," Edwards said during a stop at Zion-Olivet Daycare Center in Charleston. About half the audience members were preschoolers.

1. I'm glad Edwards addressed this Issue
I was at Operation PUSH today, and I heard Rev. Jackson's account of what the parents told him actually happened in Goose Creek. It brought tears to my eyes to think of anyone's child being treated that way. It is an outrage and I hope the parents get justice for this abuse of their children.

2. SC DU'ers reported alot about the Goose Creek Incident. I'm glad Edwards
showed up for this. It was terrible. And CNN showed it for a whole two days! Then it died in the public's memory. Good for Edwards. School brutality needs to be talked about because it has to do with Patriot Act and corrupting of laws that protect our children's privacy in their school time. IMHO, anyway.

i know a some point, Jesse Jackson absolved all the prez candidates for breaking the boycott but i think only Edwards ans Sharpton and CMB had agreed to abid by it?

7. He was the first, and he's been respecting it forever.
It was black voters who won him the race in 98 and he has been taking them seriously and they have been taking him seriously ever since that campaign.

11. Who is misinformed?
Are you aware that the NAACP has said, in their opinion, the boycott is respected by not staying in places of public accomodation, however spending money on campaigning isn't a violation of the boycott.

12. Public accomodations?
I'll have to stick with misinformed.

The solution, he {S.C. NAACP President James Gallman} said, is to let all the candidates in the state's February 2004 Democratic primary who show solidarity with the boycott to continue to campaign, but limit their South Carolina expenditures to necessities.

That includes securing office space, hotels, supplies, and radio, newspaper and television advertising, he said. Those expenditures can run into the millions of dollars.

Furthermore, the assertion that Edwards is the only one abiding by these rules remains unfounded.

14. oops. Is Edwards the only one going beyond call of duty then?
Edwards is staying in private homes in SC. I knew that much. I presumed that's what the NAACP asked for. I guess he's doing more than asked. I wonder if anyone else is going that far?

Yeah for Edwards.

15. Ruh roh. More Edwards misinformation.
Edwards is staying in private homes in SC? Perhaps, but not exclusively.

These images don't always load on DU. They are actual FEC filings from the Edwards campaign. They can be searched here: http://herndon1.sdrdc.com/cgi-bin/fecimg/?C00384073

16. Edwards is staying in private homes
In Columbia, it is well-known that he stays with his campaign chairman in SC. Don't know what these expenditures for but they are not for Edwards. And the SC NAACP has commended Edwards for his position, and I believe he is the only candidate who has been so commended. He understands this flag issue in the South, which can't be said about some of the candidates.

Documented evidence refuted with unsubstantiated assertions. That's funny.

19. Nonsense - He's right with SC NAACP
His campaign paid money to a hotel -- don't know what it was for. Not necessarily for him staying at hotel. YOU are making an assumption about what the money was for.
And if he's right with the NAACP in SC who singled him out for praise, that is fact enough for me.
