Tucson Citizen refuses to endorse either candidate (was Gore in 2000)

More and more U.S. newspapers have decided in the past 20 years not to endorse candidates in presidential elections.

The Tucson Citizen becomes one of them this election season. We will not endorse a candidate for president in the Nov. 2 election.

Some will call it a cop-out. Others will say it doesn't matter, because they think they know which way the Citizen leans. Still others - and we have heard from a number of voters with this argument - will like the decision, saying newspapers should not make political endorsements.

It is the first time in our collective memory that the Citizen won't make a presidential endorsement.

* The war on terror and in Iraq, Monday.

* The economy, including health care, Tuesday.

* Kerry's 20-year record in the Senate, Wednesday.

* A potpourri of other issues, including immigration, the environment, open government and education, Thursday."
