EARLY VOTING: Democrats grab turnout lead

Party says kickoff to election in Nevada bodes well for Kerry win
By ERIN NEFF

If three days of early voting can constitute a trend, Democrats think the beginning of the election in Nevada bodes well for a John Kerry victory.

In Clark County, Democrats voted in greater numbers than Republicans on each of the first three days of the 14-day early voting period. Overall, Democrats had a lead of 2,104 voters.

Democrats increased turnout on each of the days, edging Republicans 45 to 41 percent Saturday, 45 to 40 percent Sunday and 46 to 40 percent Monday.

"We don't traditionally vote early," Kerry campaign spokesman Sean Smith said of Democrats. "Our internal polling showed that we would do better with voters on Election Day, so we think this is a very good start for us."

Democratic voters outnumber Republicans by 57,000 in Clark County, according to registration ...

Good news from a pink-ish swing state.

Washoe County, according to the story, is also showing a slight democratic lean. The rurals are the more red portions of the state and the Democrats are hoping a good strong Democratic showing in Clark County will offset the red rurals.

2. Does early voting have exit polls?
Just wondering.

4. According to the story, they've been interviewing folks after
they've voted. The majority have said they voted for Kerry.

20. I think it can screw up the exit polls.
What if way more pukes come out on election day because a lot of the dems have voted? That would throw off the exit polls.

5. Yeah, NV was barely red in 2000 - a truly conservative state
with brothels and 24 hour drinking and gambling.

Conflicted much?

6. Is it really a good idea to publicize this?
I would think that it would just encourage more Republican turnout. I am happy more Democrats are early voting but I'm not so sure that splashing the news all over the place is a good idea. (I am referring to the article, not the poster).

7. The article is in the Las Vegas Review Journal - a truly
right leaning newspaper, the largest in Clark County, perhaps the state.

It's almost the only newspaper in Las Vegas; the Las Vegas Sun being an alternative but with much smaller circulation.

I don't know if it's good to splash it everywhere or what their intention might be.

But I thought it would boost morale for us at DU.

Having said all that, I know exactly what you mean. And yeah, they might be warning their constituents to get off their collective butt and get out to vote.

Of course, it could also demoralize them to realize they're out numbered. Who knows the minds of folks?

:hi:

9. The RJ editorial staff is rag right, but reporter Erin Neff is very fair
She wrote that article. Neff was formerly with the much more liberal Las Vegas Sun until recently.

The Nevada secretary of state estimates 70-75% turnout statewide. That would threaten the numbers from '92.

8. It might help us stop the GOP from stealing the election.
If several early voting states go unquestionably for Kerry, they won't be able to cheat as easily in Florida, Ohio, etc.

15. I was thinking this too
It has it's drawbacks but its positives as well.

It could drive the freeper vote up. The republicans may get more emboldened. This news could be encouraging for dems though. I hope dems don't let up on the voting. The most important thing is GOTV! Mobilize!

If Kerry wins NV, I really think he will win this. The Left Coast is locked up. We're looking good in MI, OH, PA, and even FL. I think IA, MN, and WI will all be close but in the end he'll get them all.

22. I thought it was a bad idea, too, but I guess it doesn't matter.
Both the Republicans and the Democrats probably have people at the polls keeping track of turnout.

It's over. Nevada goes for Kerry.

13. I hope that it true!!! Rove has family in Reno, Washoe County
and the rural repukes are spreading fear that Kerry will cost them mining jobs if elected. The dems have tried to kill the rumors but it's still out there.

14. I wish they didn't print this stuff.
Extended elections are fine, but if you're going to have them, you shouldn't release any of the vote counts until Election Day proper.

16. It's not vote counts
It's just party affiliation. No idea who voted for who yet, at all.

19. I really don't either
But it sure is making me feel better! I just wanted to make sure you understood they weren't reporting actual votes. The only thing is, we've got to make sure and not get complacent which is the downfall of the Dem Party in every election.

17. The only thing that bugs me about stories like this
is that if gives the Republicans time to react and perhaps get more out to the polls.
