Private focus groups conducted by the Democrats in the past fortnight have revealed that Kerry has scored well with his policies on equal pay and cutting healthcare costs.

Kerry’s team say that his share of the vote has jumped 3% and that he is ahead in the crucial states of Florida and Ohio.

A senior Democrat official said: “The direction in which Bush is taking America has eaten away at his support.

“Kerry’s line on Iraq has helped him to shore up his core supporters as well as the undecideds. His people were in despair a month ago but are upbeat now.”
