Hi Everybody...
Feel free to forward widely!
My apologies for all the confusion and hoopla regarding the Fahrenheit 9/11 air dates on Access Tucson. I was in New York last week trying to get this straightened out. While there, I was in contact with the Fellowship Adventure Group (the actual copyright holders of the film) as well as their law firm, O'Melveny & Myers, and Sam Behrend, Executive Director of Access Tucson, trying to come up with a solution that would not bring legal consequences to Access Tucson or myself, and it's been a long haul, especially without a computer easily at hand.
(Anyone offended by my lack of communication is welcome to contribute to the "Get Elaine A Laptop" Fund!)
I published the original announcement and press release, then I left the next day for the east coast, which was to have been, ahem, "a vacation". It was great timing though, to be there to talk to the right people and ensure that no harm would come to our public access station. That was more important than to fly under the radar and show the film.
As it turns out, Mr. Moore, while gracious and well-intentioned, did not apparently have the necessary authorization to allow me to air F9/11.
So here we are...over a week now of discussion, and it comes down to this: Fellowship Adventure Group owns the rights to F9/11, and is not granting anyone the legal permission to air the film except as they deem. Any unauthorized broadcast will result in severe legal consequences, and I am not willing to subject Access Tucson to such as has occurred at other stations that broadcast the film unauthorized.
I am still working with everyone to see if the situation can change, but I honestly doubt it at this point. Therefore, I will still be doing the pre-election special on Friday night with other films that I HAVE received permission to air. As soon as I have the night planned, I'll send out an announcement.
Between Access Tucson and myself, we received around 90-100 phone calls and emails in support.
Thanks to everyone for all your support and well wishes, and again, my apologies for the lack of communication.
On another note...I saw Amy Goodman while in New York and she sends her love to Tucson. The Firehouse is an amazing place...banks of computers, wall to wall video and audio equipment, a roundtable studio...full of determined and down to earth people fighting the good fight to bring us Democracy Now daily.
If anyone needs more information, feel free to contact me directly. I know there was an AZ Daily Star article detailing the change in plans, and Access Tucson had the update on their website, but I am home and available if you have specific questions.
Elaine
