NEW YORK (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:XOM - news), the world's largest publicly traded oil company, on Thursday reported a 56 percent rise in quarterly profit, driven by soaring oil and gas prices.

Net income in the third quarter jumped to $5.68 billion, or 88 cents a share, compared with $3.65 billion, or 55 cents a share, in the year earlier period.

1. There used to be a time...
When we had responsible administrations, and they would act on this windfall profit taking.

Oh well, they were simpler and happier times, I guess...

2. 'splain to me how they make record profits if they are just keeping up w/
the soaring price of crude oil. Shouldn't their profits go DOWN cuz ostensibly gas consumption is down cuz it's too expensive for folks to travel, etc.

That's how you know this whole thing is concocted for their benefit.

3. I had the same thought.
I know I've heard at least a dozen times that gas prices couldn't go down because the oil companies were taking a hit as is. Grrr. I drive 80+ miles round trip for work each day and my cost of living has skyrocketed since Chimpy took office.
