not an accident? How can it be? Halliburton being investigated, the explosives story, a ridiculously amatuerish terra alert, what am I forgetting? Seems 'someone' or a 'group of someones' want all ths bad news to come out 5 days before the election....

NO negative Kerry stories. Yeah, yeah, there's still 5 days, but still...

And maybe I need a good nights sleep.

That leaves Monday for Bush to recover.

47. I think it's more like being suckered by four years of lies and deceit.
The media has been played like a piano these past four years, particularly since 9/11. They played along merrily for most of that time, but something has definitely changed the playing field a little.

Personally, I'm happy to see a little role reversal when it most definitely counts the most.

the photoshopped ad could not have been ours.

I've had the same thought all day.

It's all in the timing. I'm guessing we've been sitting on some of this for awhile.

It comes like this in a rush, there is no time to spin.

The other thing I've noticed is the media is not whoring for Bush 24/7 like they did in 2000. What's that about? Are they sick of him too and willing to buck the powers that be?

We coulda had it had the media not painted Gore as a liar.

Were gonna win this thing.

53. If this was all a strategy, it was brilliant - they've frozen Rove
Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 09:02 PM by doni_georgia
Karl Rove is the grand spinmeister of this administration. By launching several attacks at once, all of them politically, uh, explosive, and all aimed at the heart of the Bush incumbency ("family/Christian values" vis-a-vis the "finger" video, and the vamishing explosives vis-a-vis the "War President," for example), the Dems might just have figured out how to deal with that slob.

This is what is known in football as a misdirection play: you snap the ball and have the running backs going in different directions, with the idea being to freeze the middle linebacker. This is, to my perception, exactly what is happening. It explains how Giuliani could have botched his TV appearance this morning and blamed the troops for the al Qaqaa problem, which Cheney says might not be a problem at all, and which Bush says Kerry doesn't have all the facts on. Can't blame him for thinking so; it's obvious these guys are on different pages for the first time in a long, long time.

Now, just as they're getting their ducks realigned, here comes Bunny Greenhouse and the FBI to drop a Halliburton bomb into the mess. They can't fight on all these fronts at once and it's clear they're not prepared to. If it's serendipitous, then maybe God Himself has had it with Bush. And if it's planned, it's ingenious in both the timing and the execution. There is no time to counter half these problems, let alone all of them, and the GLOP is in a position where they cannot afford to lose ANY ground. Moreover, this is the sort of thing you can only pull off once, because once you've shot your bolt of ammo, you're a sitting duck for counterattack. The timing leaves no real chance of an effective counter. I have no idea if this was planned, but I don't think it could be improved upon, planned or otherwise.

Mac in Ga

PS - If this is a planned strategy, I must say that I don't think we're done yet. Between the clusterCheney in Iraq and the number of false statements the Bush campaign has made, the potential for tossing a few more grenades in the elephants' tent is pretty high. It's not like these bozos can complain, though. Like with the explosives in Iraq, they've left all these mistakes and lies just sitting around, never imagining that they could be used to undermine them - or massed in a well-timed and politically mortal fusillade against them!

(on edit: corrected Ms. Greenhouse's name. My apologies.)

... and I have to say that I hope you are right in that this is a planned strategy and not happenstance.

We need to, once and for all, deal with the bullshit that Rove and his ilk dispense all too regularly. Two can play that game and in fact we have more raw material than he ever will.

35. Something the Republicans absolutely underestimated
was the power of "the Internets". And I'm serious about that.

The Internet has sped up the transmission of information enormously. Stories are coming out in hours that would have taken days, or even weeks to get into the MSM if there was no Internet. People who never really had access to information other than MSM now have rapid, unfettered access to all kinds of sources.

Imagine how long it would have taken to get one negative story about Bush circulated by snail mail or word of mouth? If you're online, you can send information to hundreds of people in seconds, and if some of them send it on ... We also have access to the MSM now that we would not have had before with snail mail.

When Kerry wins this thing, he should thank "the Internets". I truly believe the Internet has been a major player in this election.

Now, of course, the trick will be keeping it a free and open form of communication ...

46. Exactly right
This is what the Communists saw happen when they tried to take back Moscow. All over the world people were seeing what was going on, not hearing it third and fourth hand through "proper" channels.

Sillily (is that a word?) enough, it reminds me of a sequence in one of Marvel Comic's XMen books. An ancient bad guy has been awakened and warned everyone not to tell anyone else. One guy tries to use a radio and gets blasted even as he speaks. At the same time, one of the women in the group calmly sends out an all-points email. Since she hasn't moved, and hasn't said a word, the villain has no idea just how thoroughly he's been busted.

I think * and Rove were fighting last millenia style. Dudes, you can't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Trippi was right!

48. You know, this is the first election I've really felt
that I was able to make a significant contribution to. I've campaigned for Democrats since I was a kid in the 1960's, but was always frustrated by the fact that, due to physical limitations, my efforts had a tiny impact.

I live 15,000 miles away from the US right now, yet I can campaign through my computer keyboard and thanks to inexpensive phone cards, I can also use the telephone to GOTV. And it's great knowing that I can instantly add my emails to everyone else's when the pressure is on to get a story onto the MSM. There's great satisfaction in knowing, when a story that needs to be heard ends up going to air, in thinking that my contribution did something.

Without the Internet, I wouldn't have been able to be very active in this election, and it's the one I would have wanted to be most active in. If I didn't have my Internet connection, I would be confined to trying to GOTV among other American citizens in Australia, and marching up and down my tiny, rural street with a Kerry sign, to the amusement of my Aussie neighbors.

40. Rove Tactics....Possible:
A Rovian tactic is to spread mis-information to the enemy that makes the opponent look bad...and when it's disproven as absolute fact, it makes the enemy look bad.

Example #1.) RatherGate; the truth of Rather's facts were outweighed by the indignation of fcries of foul play, left slanted media; not checking facts, etc. Result:? Rather looked bad, CBS looked bad, and Bush was still not proven to have gone AWOL or discharged dishonorably, or gotten favored treatment because of his father.

Example #2.) Judge Election? or Senate? Rove ordered and paid to have people distribute flyers to neighborhoods that scandalized his candidate. Everyone thought that the other guy did it, and it was right before the election; he couldn't retract it...awful mess.

Hatfield?

I'm worried that Mohammed Abbas was paid favors to release the info to the IAEA. Why else would he do this right now? He knew it would hurt Bush. If he leaked the info, and it's proven that the explosives were stolen prior to the invasion, then we have egg on our face, and it detracts from the real issues.

Every time I hear Bush say: Check your facts, I shiver. (He doesn't check his facts, he lies.) But it seems like a set-up.

If someone could give me a good reason why Abbas would release this info to the IAEA, I'd appreciate it!

55. Possible
But with the TV footage from the folks imbedded with the 101st, along with the word that info on the explosives cache at al Qaqaa was passed to Bremer a long time ago, it seems unlikely that Rove would have set this up six months in advance. Which is what this would have required.
And the finger video... how are they going to explain that one?
And Bunny Greenhouse.... I somehow doubt that this one has Rove behind it.

Guys, look at Giuliani, Cheney, Bush and McClelland's statements today. They are NOT on the same page. If Rove planned this, these guys wouldn't be contradicting each other, ducking, passing the buck to the Pentagon or the troops, etc. That's not Rove's M.O. His attacks are almost always single-shot, well-placed, and very dirty, dehumanizing his opponent through implied unseemly behavior. What we've seen today is widespread, multifront, technical, and has growth potential in many directions. I might give Carville credit, but he'd need three Donald Segrettis and a couple of Alexander Haigs to get this much stuff to fly in 24 hours.

Look, you don't mess with the intelligence community. BushCo ignored their advice, got their director to "resign", pinned the blame of their folly on the CIA, FBI, everyone but themselves, outed an Agent who was undercover, am I leaving anything out?

BushCo are political animals in Washington, and no matter how long they stay, they will be temporary. The CIA is perennial, they are beuraocrats(sp?), they have to stay there long after the Bushies are gone. The CIA doesn't cow to any politicians, who blame their own incompetence on this government agency. I had a feeling they would be the ones to destroy the Bushies. They're in the business of bringing governments down.

CIA, the REAL corporate bigwigs, illuminati types, one-worlders. They are done with Bush. Bush is NO match for them.

56. The lies are catching up to them
The big Rove attacks--Sinclair, the wolves, the "terror tape"--have fizzled. The truth is on Kerry's side, and it's overpowering them.
