Trick or Treat for Kerry...
Taking a cue from another DUer a couple of days ago, I've made up very simple little quarter-sheet flyers to drop into the kids' goodie bags on Trick or Treat along with the candy.

It reads:

Do it for the children!
VOTE
(Kerry-Edwards graphic)
This Tuesday
November 2nd

My K/E HQ has requested that I print out a handful of originals for them to pass to volunteers as well, so I've had to add a small disclaimer at the bottom (Paid for by the Wisconin Democratic Party, etc.).

I'd encourage you all to do this - ESPECIALLY if you get lower-income trick or treaters at your door. This flyer is specially targeted at folks who weren't planning on going out to vote.

1. Idea For Scary Halloween Costume
Dress up as "Voting for Bush"
We're doing it with fake campaign buttons that tell the real truth.
For Example:
SURVIVAL OF THE RICHEST and POOR PEOPLE SUCK and SHEEP RULE
or simply BUSH-CHENEY 2004 SCREW YOU

2. clever idea, but I'm not sure its a good one.
I'm not criticizing you, but I'd be concerned that something like this would back-fire. If my children came home with religious tracts or GOP GOTV efforts in their bags I'd hit the roof. But that's me, I think turning children into walking political ads (even if its in a bag waiting for the parents to find) is wrong. Kids should be left to be kids. Its one thing to dress your kid up and make a political statement, but its another thing entirely to make someone else's kid be the bringer of politics.

Its a clever idea though, kinda like giving out tooth brushes instead of candy to the kids.

3. Yes, could possibly backfire. A Chimp supporting parent could find it and
be livid about it! Kind of like how livid I would be to find a Swiftboat flyer in my child's candy. Might want to rethink this, ClassWarrior. Do you live in a heavily Democratic neighborhood?

5. If the parent supports Chimpy anyway, I don't care if they get hacked.

And yes, I'm in a neighborhood of probably mostly urban non-voters. People who WOULD be Dems if they voted.

Plus, a purported "Swiftboat Flyer" would be full of lies. This is purely informational. It simply says "VOTE," here's the date, and by the way, Kerry/Edwards.

10. Oh, okay. Then you're probably okay. I get you about the Swiftboat
flyer as compared to yours. Yours is purely informative, I get it now!

Let her rip!

4. Or giving tooth brushes WITH the candy. LOL
I can see your point, but that's why I emphasize low-income neighborhoods and non-voters. It may be the one thing that gets through to these folks clearly stating the date of E-Day. I would definitely NOT do it in a higher income neighborhood, or in a neighborhood of strong B/C voters. I think it needs to be judged case-by-case.

7. Well, I'd be interested to see what happened.
My neighborhood is solid Kerry. There's a 3-1 ratio of K/E and Obama stuff to B/C and Keyes stuff on my surrounding blocks.

And, I'd like to point out, everybody has their Halloween decorations up but the B/C houses look the most dismal and scary of the lot. The non-political houses and the Dem houses all look festive warm and inviting. It's pretty funny if you ask me.

6. it could backfire
At times, I find myself torn between doing what feels good (going postal on a repuke) and what is probably the smarter approach (reasoned discussion). I think this falls into that category. And I am not usually one for "playing nice" with the enemy.

But I do have a good idea for a jack-o-lantern. I like the idea of carving a stop bush* message, but the latest thing from MoveOn gave me another idea.

The MoveOn pic of Chimpie that is on the "You're Fired" flyer is really scary. In a jack-o with an open front and a bulb for light, that face would probably scare every little kid who sees it.

8. I don't see this as being anywhere NEAR going postal on the CONs.
It's mostly informational. The main point is to let people know the date of the E-Day, and by the way, vote K/E. I think it's very reasoned.

9. Go door to door and speak with people. But I think we should leave
halloween and children out of it. They cannot vote. I don't like the avon ladies who stick candy to their books and hand it out...this will be perceived as much much worse I fear. :hi:

11. To low income voters? You think so? I've never seen ANY...
...Avon Ladies in MY neighborhood. From my experience they think big scary black men are lurking behind every tree, and so they avoid my (incidentally very pleasant) part of the city for the most part.

12. I'm not trying to be critical, I just don't think it's a really good idea
to do this. We can canvass. That's what I'm doing. This is a children's holiday, not an opening for campaigning in my opinion. For what it's worth, my neighborhood is not the Palisades. Many people sell Avon to make a living...

...freebies for their kids, but would get offended at something like this, I'm not going to get through to them anyway. In other words, you're always going to offend someone - even going canvassing or phone-banking - but I think the net effect will be a positive one.

15. By the way, I always am amused when...
...people refer to Halloween or Christmas as a "children's holiday." If it is, then why do the bars do such a brisk business on Halloween? And why are adults the ones suffering nervous breakdowns trying to recreate a Currier & Ives Christmas?

16. I have never attended a bar or party as an adult. What am I doing
today? Attending my son's classroom party. This part of the holiday is for children. And, yes this part is critical, you and your dem office are making a huge mistake in my opinion.

Cheers from one who has yet to suffer a nervous breakdown over any holiday. :hi:
