CNN reporting that Dems planning to filibuster debate on Condi tomorrow
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 03:40 PM by Skidmore
and Judy Woofwoof is a bit peevish about it. She was grousing with the guy who reported it. The drama of the committee meeting is not fitting well into their news cycle. THey want to party now. The main thrust of this fillibuster is to butt up against the inaugral parties and force the Rs to push the vote on Condi's nomination till next week.

3. Good for them
I want to see this kind of backbone for the next 4 years. Period.

Cable opinion is going to go into attack mode real soon. The word of the day will be "Obstructionist."

The Democratic response should be. "Damn right we're obstructing this dangerous administration. Get used to it."

24. When I hear the word "obstructionist," I automatically think--bad policy.
If they want to obstruct bad policy, I'll send all the coffee and donuts and uppers I can get my hands on!

7. I expect Dems to filibuster CONTINUALLY on everything for the next 4 years
I don't care if it's reading the whole series of Harry Potter out loud in various languages, but * has no mandate, and the Republicans must be weakened and ALLOW the Dems to have their say or their amendments or bills on hand and PASSED without a peep on election reform and promise to investigate and IMPEACH the ENTIRE maladministration before they are allowed to end the filibuster.

8. And if the Repukes try to use the nuclear option
It'll only bite back to them HARD - a massive defeat in 2006 for the Republican majority while * looks incredibly stupid in PRISON by mid 2007.

10. And in the meantime...
we'll have pissed away the only power we have left in the Government.

You're betting away the little power we have left on the notion that we're going to have a massive tidal wave of support in 2006? Horrible, horrible idea, in my opinion.

What happens if we DON'T win back 5 Senate seats and 16 House seats? Then it's another 2 years of being COMPLETELY powerless.

That means "Welcome Supreme Court Justice Estrada". That means "Welcome Supreme Court Justice Pickering". That means "Sure, we'll ABSOLUTELY pass the declarations of war against Iran, Syria, Venezuela, and <insert country here>". And just about anything else you can think of.

18. the Republicans are poised to change the filibuster provisions
and apparently they are serious about it. If the Democrats filibuster just to obstruct Republicans, you can be certain the provision will be revoked. Of course, the Republicans may revoke it anyway.

9. with only two votes against Rice from the committee?
Do they even have enough to filibuster? I'm suspicious of the accuracy of that report.

14. If Dems. all vote against something they look weak when it passes.
Is this a strategy to keep the democrats from looking powerless and still achieve their agenda of slowing Bush's momentum and rallying the troops.

16. I disagree. If they stand up and fight now, making all the strong
points they have at their disposal, they will be able to hark back to their actions later on when this country starts to fall apart -- which is exactly where BushAmerica is headed.

If they continue to kiss-ass (God, wasn't Biden SICKENING today!), why should the people turn to them in a crisis. If you're going to have a fascist government, it might as well be a full-blown one, and that's exactly what Bush is offering.

Hopefully there will be more to follow. I also hope they have their media strategy together. If they are going to invite this type of heat, they had better respond with a unified voice. If they do this half-assed they'll end up getting burned, and then crawl right back up in to their shells. But I must say, forcing the corporate media to interrupt the bright-red-chimp-ass-kissing ceremony with news of actual dissent, is a beautiful gesture. If they're serious about this, they have my full support.

23. Even without a filibuster
Won't it still screw up the news cycle? I thought that a vote for cloture only limited the remaining time for debate. Couldn't the Democrats still use all of the remaining time to push back the vote for a day or two?

28. It will NOT be a filibuster
For Christ's sake, I wish people like CNN would actually report what is said and not what they interpret. Reid will demand the nomination be opened to debate (done by objecting to a motion for unanimous consent, basically) and all the prominent Democrats will start rattling off a laundry list of how Rice and the administration has screwed up. She'll still pass, but that will be the story.

Political strategy, whoulda thunk it?
