Poll question: How do we become proud to be Democrats again?
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 06:20 PM by LoZoccolo
I like this quote by Howard Dean:

You have the power to take this country back from a president who has forgotten ordinary Americans. You have the power to take this party back and make it stand for something again so we'll be proud to be Democrats. And together we have the power to take the White House back in 2004, and that is exactly what we're going to do.

How do we become proud to be Democrats again?

4. Sorry
I have always been proud to be a Democrat. Never thought otherwise. We have always stood for something, it gets a little murky at times but such is the way of a democratic, big tent party. Sorry Howard, you may not be proud of it but I am.

5. The leadership is something to be ashamed of
They're spineless wimps who just can't wait to cave to whatever the pubbies want. They whore for corporate cash and spurn the party rank and file.

I'm proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the democratic party base, even though I may disagree with a lot of them from time to time. Rank and file Demorats are fighting the good fight, working for economic and social justice.

The leadership is another matter. Onc suspects they're pleased as punch with another Bush term, since it will fatten their portfolios and lower their taxes.

8. Do somthing about this.
"The Republicans are 95 percent corrupt and the Democrats are 75 percent corrupt," Kennedy. "They are accepting money from the same corporations. And of course, that is going to corrupt you."

9. That would be the strengthening strategy.
If people don't like the sources of funds, they'll have to make up the difference. Odd that the people most vocal about the funding are the ones threatening to secede so easily.

30. I give to candidates I actually LIKE
In fact, I gave more money than I could really afford to candidates that I liked.

I didn't give to the DNC because I find that the party as a whole is too wimpy and has forgotten that it's supposed to be the opposition party.

I give to candidates who stand up for the little person.

10. I've yet to stop being proud!
But, that was a good post, as it reminded me that it's ok and quite healthy to joke, but when we participate (guilty here) in the negative aspects, that energy could go into strengthening what defines us.

If we can make it thru the next 4 yrs of pure unadultered HELL, I don't believe they'll ever, I mean EVER gain office again... that's "IF" we get through. I think they know it too.

15. I'm proud to be a Dem already
And this isn't a real poll. It's meant to make a point that the poll function wasn't needed for.

However, I'm sympathetic to that point. Drama queens and dramatic exits and the hoped for "Oh no! Don't go! What can we do to make you stay!?" can be quite tiresome.

27. So, then
You express your concern for the poor and weak and for unjustified wars by making sure that Republicans win, who will be worse?

Sorry, bud, you're the one who has drunk the Kool-Aid.

Ohh, too "real." Yeah, you're, like, SO hardcore, like, cool, like, wow.

21. Why in the HELL would I be "proud" of this travesty of a party?!
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 10:40 PM by eg101
Let's see: the Democrats along with GOP have consistently FAILED to bring universal healthcare to America, to deliver what every other industrialed western nation already has, so that now over 40 million Americans have no decent healthcare, so that 18 thousand die every year from lack of healthcare, and thousands more go bankrupt.

And you want me to be PROUD of this? WTF??!!

Let's see: the Democrats along with GOP have let the corporations take our advanced manufacturing jobs overseas, and now they are starting on teh white collar jobs.

And you want me to be PROUD of this? WTF??!!

Let's see: the Democrats along with GOP have meddled in overseas countries for so long that they have created terrorists who came over heer to blow us up, and then when that happened, they used that as an excuse to go on a murderous rampage that will endgender decades of terrorsts?

And you want me to be PROUD of this? WTF??!!

Proud is as proud does. They need to earn it!

For those who are not proud, why do you belong to the party? (Note, this is not a thinly-veiled invitation to leave it or leave DU or anything of the kind. It's just a question.)

26. I'm not sure that your #1 captures Dean's point.
Bill Clinton won elections, but in the end he didn't make me any more proud to be a Democrat. He certainly didn't make me feel as if, by winning elections, he was making the party stand for something.

Pride comes from achievement, from fighting the good fight for the common good even if you lose. Winning elections, while necessary for *legislative* achievement, is not in and of itself a source of pride.
