3. Umm..
She lives in Baghdad, and her father was killed by Saddam's henchmen 11 years ago. She is Iraqi. Sounds like a "real" Iraqi to me.

5. She's a right-wing think tanker. Don't be fooled by that story.

Her husband was planning a coup.

10. If he was planning a coup against Saddam
I don't see the problem. He was a ruthless dictator.

15. Her husband was killed
by Saddam's government is because he was planning a coup. This changes the story because every government does this (even if the individual is justified in their actions). It also means the Bush administration twisted the story for their own dastardly aims (again...).

As many others are pointing out, her story is suspect, at best.

Saddam was a ruthless dictator, but the following countries have ruthless dictators/powerful royalty (authoritarian governments) as well: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kuwait and occupied Iraq. What do these regimes all have in common? They are supported by the US. Gosh, we must really love freedom.

in 1994 not her husband.

7. Is her dad alive or not?
First I hear he was killed by Saddam, then I hear she voted with her parents. Which is it?

After reading her bio, I seriously doubt she lives in Baghdad.

8. Sounds a little too close to...
"House N*gger" for my taste... Not sure if the original poster meant it that way, but that's how I read it.

Could be me reading too much into it too. Things don't always get read the same way you mean them... I've had things I've written taken the wrong way many times. :)

17. WI Independent:Would you please consider refraining from using the N word?
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 08:16 PM by ultraist
It really turns my stomach. I don't think racial slurs are necessary to make a point. She is "brown skinned" as Bush says, why envoke racism?

Thank you

24.  I was not using it as a reference to anyone...
only as a reference to what I saw when I read the original post. When I saw "House Iraqi" in the original post I thought it was a veiled reference to... well... you know. It turns out I was wrong. Had I said nothing I would still have an undeserved harsh opinion of MikeG.

It's much the same way you used "N word" in your post... I guess I could have said "House N word"??? How else would I make my point?

29. I kinda, sorta but not really see your point; OP did not use the N word
Whether he/she meant to imply that or not, I still don't think it's necessary to use racial slurs.

It's your choice of course, just making a suggestion.

Koppel billed and cooed that Bush "hit it out of the park" by having her, which made me start wondering who she was.

14. damn guys..................she was a plant!!!!
from:

dang people....
1st:
LIST OF NEWLY APPOINTED IRAQI AMBASSADORS AROUND THE WORLD:

EGYPT: Ambassador Safia'a Al Suhail
Daughter of Sheikh Talib al Suhail al Tamimi; born and lived in Lebanon, where her mother comes from; became politically active after her father was assassinated in Beirut in 1996 by Saddam's secret service; married Bakhtyar Amin, Kurdish political activist and founder of Iraqi Democracy Institute in the US, who is now Minister for Human Rights.

@nd:
"Eleven years ago, Safia's father was assassinated by Saddam's intelligence service. Three days ago in Baghdad, Safia was finally able to vote for the leaders of her country -- and we are honored that she is with us tonight."

Her name is Safia Taleb Al Souhail.

She works for the "International Alliance For Justice," which no longer has a website that is functioning. < www.i-a-j.org. >

I was struck by the line "three days ago in Baghdad, Safia was finally able to vote..."

I did a search and found that she published an article in December of 2003 for the group "Foundation For the Defence of Democracies."

The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD) is a non-partisan, non-profit policy institute dedicated to:

* Finding the most effective ways to defeat terrorism--and the totalitarian ideologies used to incite and justify terrorism.
* Employing strategic communications, education and research to fight terrorism across national, ethnic and religious lines.
* Promoting freedom and basic human rights for all peoples.

So, then I went to see who they are, being non-partisan and all. Board of Directors?

Steve Forbes.
Jack Kemp.
Jeanne Kirkpatrick.

OK, so far not so balanced.

Distinguished Advisors?
Newt Gingrich.
R. James Woolsey.

OK, yikes. Still a bit off kilter.

Board of Advisors?
Gary Bauer.
Charles Karuthammer, (yes the columnist)
Bill Kristol.
Zell Miller.
Richard Perle.

wow. OK and then finally we see who represents the other side on that board.

Donna Brazille. (?)
Frank Lautenberg.
Chuck Schumer.

All very interesting, strange, but leading me away from my original question. Who is Safia Taleb Al Souhail?

Well I read her piece published under the banner of this group here. It was written in January of 2003. Just before we headed off to war. I think it's important to remember the mood of the time, and the debates we were having.
