U.S. 'in for a shock'
In early election results, Shiite cleric's alliance trouncing Washington's favorite
Borzou Daragahi, Chronicle Foreign Service

Friday, February 4, 2005

Baghdad -- Partial results from Sunday's election suggest that U.S.-backed Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's coalition is being roundly defeated by a list with the backing of Iraq's senior Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al- Sistani, diminishing Allawi's chances of retaining his post in the next government.

Sharif Ali bin Hussein, head of the Constitutional Monarchy Party, likened the vote outcome to a "Sistani tsunami" that would shake the nation.

"Americans are in for a shock," he said, adding that one day they would realize, "We've got 150,000 troops here protecting a country that's extremely friendly to Iran, and training their troops."

23. Right, I get that,
But what I don't get, is how they know 'which candidate' is winning, or which candidate they were even voting for - because (at least what I heard) was that the ballots didn't have candidates names or any identifying info on them, just numbers ... like "candidate 1, 2, 3" etc.

So how does the voter know that they were voting for a Sunni, a Shiite, or Mickey Mouse, for that matter ?

ia a THREAT to us....

Dats whot dey did to Saddam....and his WMD...he was a threat....

then....it became....we want to give them FREEDOM..which by itself is wonderful... but in this context...its a smokescreen to cover the absense of MWD and to give a good spin on things. They not fooling us nor the Iraqi people...and that includes the Iranian folks as well.

Come, we to to the chapel....Catwoman and I are gonna git hitched....

13. No electricity
They don't have enough electricity. This one Iraqi blog I read sometimes have stated they have electricity in town for two/three hours to do things but other then that zippo. But I think they'll still find someway to fix it.

17. Sounds like they need to get Ken Blackwell over there, pronto.
These neo-cons are so naive. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the people they think will be puppets turn out to be just the opposite. Then what's the US going to do when the newly elected government demands to the world that the US exit Iraq as soon as possible.

20. I think it's good
Allawi will never be seen as anything but a US puppet.

I think Sistani has really been a pretty positive influence. He could have blown us out with a full scale Civil War anytime he's wanted to. Instead he's called for calm and put together a pretty diverse slate of candidates.

I think it will be for our good if his slate wins. I think it's our best chance of getting out of there.

27. It may stop the invasion of Iran. If the Shiites form an alliance with
Iran, it will be impossible for the US to get away with another unprovoked invasion, this time in Iran. If they decide to bomb Iran, the troops in Iraq will be slaughtered.

30. It's still amazing that little ole me - living in little ole Tennessee
making little ole money - predicted this when the little ole election was first mentioned.
NOBODY seemed to understand when I would state this - well, except for the Arabic guy I work with. He got it and agreed.
If they're in for a shock, then it's because of they're own stupidity. Maybe that'll "learn 'em" not to watch so much Faux News.
