Suggestion: Let's engage Dr. James Dobson in Gannon Gay Porn Buzz
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 11:38 AM by NAO
Radical Cleric Dr. James Dobson, noted Fundamentalist leader and head of the extremist group "Focus on the Family" was one of the most active and vocal supporters of the re-election of Bush.

Recently, Dobson has made waves by issuing a fatwa on cartoon character Sponge Bob Square Pants for being a homosexual or for being tolerant of homosexuals.

Dobson has a massive army of zombie followers who will relentlessly pound Washington for whatever lame cause Dobson orders them to pursue.

I'd bet that if we got Dobson and his Fundamentalist Christian Jihaders on the Gannon Gay porn issue, as well as the deception involved and blessed by the White House, they could cause more trouble for Bush than all the liberals in the US combined.

They will call their congressmen. They will march on the White House. They will circulate petitions demanding that Bush apologize for the deception and demanding that he publicly rebuke Gannon for his homosexuality. They will demand that Bush publicly denounce homosexuality.

My guess is that Bush will blow them off. That would be great because they would start actively working against him. It would destroy the religious reich/political conservative alliance.

If by chance Bush indulges them, he will be seen to be a bigot, plus he will have acknowledged his deliberate use of deception and propaganda.

Either outcome is fine with me.

1. If you go to their website, you can use their "email your gov't reps"
to send stuff to various ReThug Congress people - and it will look like the base is mobilized against this issue.

2. That's also what Rude Pundit suggested!
He suggested that we all start flooding the email boxes of groups like "Focus on the Family" with messages stating our outrage as conservative Christians that the Bush administration would be embracing a gay prostitute.

I would LOVE to see this become a reality!

9. Stupid Question... but
Okay, I sincerely don't mean to sound naive, but I have this little fear that some elements may be getting lost in the Gannongate controversy. I know I am fundamentally upset that Gannon was an obvious shill in the reporter pool. He was the guy in the bunko scheme who makes you think the game isn't rigged.

His sexual orientation is only a factor because of the administrations supposed hatred of homosexuals and secret tolerance of them when it serves their needs. I guess I'm getting nervous that our 'focus' on Gannon's sexuality might be perceived as intolerance on our side. Shouldn't we be applauding the White House for its tolerance? That if it is able to have a tolerance for Gannon and Gannon's escort service, it can extend that tolerance to others?

Shouldn't this be our message to the Christian boards, that the Bush administration is demonstrating that tolerance is necessary for a civil society?

10. True
I think it should definately be a dual fight. Motivating Bush's "base" against him is only one part of that action to be taken. The other, as you pointed out, is to get it into the media that this administration is actively poisoning the press pool with propaganda mongers. Both are damaging.

Although, energizing the fundies does sound like too much fun!

11. I firmly agree
I do. I love doing this kind of stuff. It is I have the fear that I am only helping sow seeds of hate. This goes back to the Jeff Christy stuff and calling Rush on his homosexual past. I never want to confuse the issue of what it is I'm fighting against.

12. Bear in mind
that "Gannon" has made a number of explicitly homophobic statements in his writing. He's a hypocrite of the worst kind; whether or not he's personally gay is of no interest to me, but someone who makes his living offering sexual services to other men truly has no leg to stand on when it comes to his own moral superiority.

13. me, too...re loving this stuff, and I particularly love THIS Dobson story
Garry Wills wrote a column on what a liar Dobson is, and challenged him several times on this topic, something about which Dobson, to this day has NEVER responded:

In his opinion column, Garry Wills revisited the wild claim of conservative leader James Dobson, whose book Children at Risk reported that the White House distributed a workbook to schools asking children "to draw the world's largest penis, compare white and black penises, and show their parents making love." (I'm quoting Wills.) Dobson has never been able to substantiate this claim, despite repeated requests for evidence. And Wills persists in pointing out the credibility gap because the book's introduction was written by William Bennett. "Bennett goes about denouncing Clinton as a liar," Wills says, "but he promotes the kind of lies that right-wingers want to hear

from a Slate link...will get if you want

15. We sow no seeds
They are already ripe for the harvest, and we've had nothing to do with planting any of it.

It is the sex angle which will hurt the most and if we let 'em slide on any aspect relating to that angle, we might as well give up, because nothing sells a story like SEX.

21. The only reason we could
get the truth behind Gannon/Guckert is if they get on it too. They have to demand it. I think that's the only way we'll ever know about this.

The man is more a hooker by profession than 'journalist'. A two day seminar propaganda weekend for $50 bucks does not a journalist make!

He makes $200 hr./ $1200 weekend- for sex. Pro-rated, that means he got his 'journalism' credentials for 15 minutes worth of prostitution..

(Notice the homosexual aspect was not even mentioned)

BUT- The guy called out and 'gay baitted' Kerry for being 'the first gay president'

This man is vicious scum.

18. Exposing Hypocrisy is not the same as intolerance
We can taunt the Bible thumping Bushies with Gannon's sexuality without being intolerant of homosexuality.

The difference is that we are directing our disgust at their bigotry and hypocrisy, not against homosexuality.

By helping Dobson get excited about this, we are helping Dobson make an ass of himself and discredit himself.

Your statement, "Shouldn't this be our message to the Christian boards, that the Bush administration is demonstrating that tolerance is necessary for a civil society?" leads me to believe that you do not understand the nature of these Christians.

They do not give a rat's ass about tolerance or civil society. They believe that if something is 'sinful', it is wrong to tolerate it - period. They believe that God will rain burning sulfur on cities and burn everyone alive to a horrible death if there are too many 'sinners'.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is not a story or myth to them - it is a historical event. As a child I was told in Sunday School that archaeologists had found the remains of charred cities, and that the remains of the people were mixed with high levels of the compound sulfur. This 'find' supposedly corroborated the story of God's rain of fire and brimstone. They even told us that a 5 1/2 foot column of sodium chloride was found on the outskirts of the city. (This was allegedly the remains of Lot's wife, who was turned into a pillar of salt by God as punishment for looking back at her beloved home as they fled the destruction).

There is no reasoning with people who believe things like this. They are beyond sanity or rationality.

But we are also performing a needed task of informing our fellow Americans about the White House. We are obliged as citizens to give them accurate, extremely detailed facts surrounding this issue.

19. I have a relative who has followed Dobson for over 20 years
This is a good strategy to get people like her fired up. I think she's being spiritually abused -- but there is no way to get that message through. I do believe that her heart is in the right place on most things (except social issues as defined by Dobson). We have to find ways to win her better self over to our side.
