So I finally saw The Speech
I mean, I'd heard it, and yeah, Dean sounded pretty over the top.

But I finally SAW it, on the Daily Show (where else?)--the dinner-hour repeat.

And I suppose if I had any sense I wouldn't dredge this up again--maybe best if this thread just heads for the bottom like a Russian submarine.

But um, what's the big effing deal, anyway? When you SEE the thing, it seems, I dunno, quite good humored and fun. A little self-mocking, even. Certainly not some lunatic rant the way it's being played up.

I'm not a huge Dean supporter (2nd choice for me), but my god, if ever you wanted depressing evidence that we're in for the same propagandistic shitstorm we got in 2000....

If we heard as many repeats of "weapons of mass destruction-related program activities" as we're hearing of this, the Chimp wouldn't have a prayer in November.

1. DR.BB ; Nail on the head
We are in for one hell of a motherfucking propaganda shitstorm.

First, against Howard Dean so that one of thier choices who is not a threat to them wins the nom.

Then, against that nominee even if it isn't Howard Dean.

5. Of Course, It's A Presidential Election!
Of course, it will be raining, hailing, sleeting propaganda in every direction until the election. That's why I don't want some loose canon who doesn't have a good sense of the image he's projecting in the top spot. We need somebody smooth, quite frankly.

2. I have said before that
the more I watched it, the less it bothered me. But the initial reaction I had, in the context of the night of the caucus, was also quite real. Would you want to show that speech to someone just tuning in to the race?

There was passion and there wasn't any of the "crazy" shit I had expected from listening to the press.

I got a clue for all you pink tutus, passion wins!

about 18% of the vote. And he probably won't reach that in New Hampshire. You say it doesn't matter? Tell that to Durbin.

Now that Dean has been tarred and feathered he can make this his theme chant, take control, turn the tide get the last laugh himself why let everyone else steal his idea and have all the fun.

4. The Big Effing Deal Is
Honestly people who look at that speech and go, what's wrong with it? My question is: what's RIGHT with it? He was trying to "be fun?" ouch.

It's not that it was a monumental screw up but it was really, REALLY the wrong time to do it, people who already knew/liked him think it's cute and everyone else gets this bizarre impression

Edwards gave a kick-ass speech IMO!

Frankly I'm starting to think that this "What's Wrong With Dean's Speech" question is one of those questions like "Why Do The Arabs Hate Us?" If you answer it honestly the asker yells at you!

7. Someone I know really trashed
CLark for giving a complex answer to the IRW question. "He should have known better if he is going to run for office." So said the Dean supporter.

Dean should have known better. He's supposedly experienced and should have known how this would play. One friend of mine called me after the speech and said, "Well, the Minnesota Vikings are looking for a new coach."

9. LATimes: "Dean’s Late-Night Battle Cry Likely to Echo From Here On"
Howard Dean's overheated concession speech in Iowa could prove a damaging turning point in his campaign, intensifying concerns that Vermont's former governor is prone to outbursts and fits of pique that make him unqualified to be president, analysts said Wednesday.

The image of Dean repeatedly punching the air in a performance some likened to an emotional meltdown has played endlessly on cable news networks and offered instant fodder for late-night comedy monologues.

"He's a very rational, pleasant human being, but he looked like a rabid dog," said Charlie Cook, publisher of a nonpartisan Washington political newsletter. "To say he appeared unpresidential is an understatement....."

11. Everyone likes to say "Dean will fight back"
when it is claimed that the media will kill him in the GE.

Well, now's his chance to show us he can do that. If he survives the beating he's received in the past couple days, I'll be confident about his chances against Bush. Otherwise I'd assume the same thing will happen in he GE.

32. Correct
You are right. As unfair as this attack is, it is indeed a test for Dean. We all knew shit like this would happen and we all contemplated who would be best able to handle it. Now it's time for Dean, Trippi and the Deaniacs to be tested. We'll see what happens. If Dean fails, somebody else will be next in line for the firing squad and there's no indication that anybody else will be more successful, but that's for later. Now the ball is in the hands of the Dean camp. Tonight is crucial.

13. I've heard many Campaign Speechs and "Rally Troops" Speeches in
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 12:29 AM by KoKo01
my lifetime. Dean's speech was a rally cry to pump up his tired campaign workers who were down because they were hoping for first place. They needed a boost and he gave it to them.

He was so kind and gracious in that speech to those who supported him, and did such a great job of "pumping them up" that I can't believe what I read posted here and the posts about what the Whore Media are doing to "Gore" him.

That we Democrats would be manipulated by this crap is amazing to me. But then I realize that we have partisans here who are as manipulative as the Whore Media.

Hey....if it's all a game....then don't trash Dean for being a Coach!

That's what he needs to do...pump up the troops to get on to NH and down the road to WIN! What would you have him do? Be a wimp like Tom Daschle?

18. AP story: "Dean's Raucous Iowa Speech Lives On"
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 12:38 AM by NewYorkerfromMass
http://www.newsday.com/news/politics/wire/sns-ap-deans-iowa-speech,0,3195658.story?coll=sns-ap-politics-headlines

Quotes from the article:

James Carville: "It hurt him."

Pat Buchanan: "I don't think it's survivable."

Pollster for the Boston Globe and WBZ-TV: "That speech could not have helped him in any way."

Political scientist and pollster from UNH: "I think it crystallized a lot of the concerns voters in Iowa had as well as voters in New Hampshire had about Dean's potential temperament as a president"

Pollster from ARG: "That thing has legs..."

17. I saw the speech on C-Span that night
and I didn't think it was such a big of a deal. Dr. Dean struck me as being tired and somewhat letdown. He had to be aware of the disappointment his supporters must be feeling and he probably felt that a passionate speech might invigorate them and let them know that he hadn't given up. It was only the first primary. He has done a lot to energize people in the Democratic party to get out and participate in the election. That is so important in this country. I give him due credit for that.
I haven't selected a particular candidate as I believe most of them offer a better alternative to W.
Bottom line for me though is ABB, especially after that hideous SOTU address last night.
