The chimp feels love.

But it is unrequited. Now, how can anyone look at this picture and see anything but a sorry statement about the trip.

and my first impression was to notice Putin's hand over the top of Bush's handshake.

Bush attempts to establish dominency by aggressively putting his arm around Putin, but Putin, subtly gets his dominence message across by laying his hand gently over the handshake.

My two cents. Putin says he is in charge with this subtle movement.

Bush= I love you and welcome you into my domain--it's all about me

Putin= I gotcha hands down.

Also the look on Bush's face belies his insecurity.

7. Germans Trust Putin More than Bush
Juan Cole

Frank Domoney kindly sends his translation of a Die Welt article that reports that over-all, the German public trusts Vladimir Putin more than it trusts George W. Bush. I was struck that it doesn't trust either one very much, and that even in West Germany they are in a virtual tie. It is a sad commentary on the trans-Atlantic relationship, and is almost completely the fault of George W. Bush.

' Die Welt: US President calls Europeans to take part in joint working in spite of the differences over Iraq. The Germans trust Russian President Vladimir Putin more than the American President George W. Bush.

Tasked by the Die Welt the renowned Opinion Polling Institute Dimap asked the opinion of Germans about the USA. The Russian president gets a greater degree of trust particularly in the East of the Republic, according to the results of a representative poll. While the average result across the Federal republic is 29% for Putin and 24% for Bush, in East Germany Putin reaches 37% (Bush 16%) In contrast in West Germany the value for Bush reaches 27%, for Putin 26%.

It is clear from the results of the poll that both presidents are greeted with scepticism in Germany. A majority of 37% trusts neither. Infratest Dimap polled 1000 citizens between 15 and 16 February 2005

9. Chimp is trying for the upperhand with Putin by
putting his arm around him. Chimp wants to rape hug him like he did with Lieberman, but it's a no go.

10. It's not rape if there is consent.
Lieberman drank the Kool-Aid, but otherwise I agree with your point.

12. At least these guys loved Chimpy...
From the Radio Free Europe website. There may be a tad-bit of propagandizing here, since the word "freedom", "liberty" or "democracy" seems to appear at least once in every sentence.

My own personal interpretation of the propaganda content of the article:

Look at how the Europeans LOVE your president! Look at the noble things he stands for! Look at how someone who wasn't even there at the meeting, which this article is supposed to be about, nonetheless recognizes the deepfelt commitment to liberty of Geo. Bush, and sees America's righteous stand against human rights abuses! Now why can't YOU love your president like this?

So here is a glimpse of His bushly greatness:

Eastern Europe: Democracy Activists Cite Bush's Support For Their Efforts
By Jeremy Bransten

Bratislava, 25 February 2005 --

<snip>

A group of 21 of these activists, representing 13 countries -- including Georgia, Serbia, Moldova, Belarus, and Ukraine met privately with Bush at the White House's request on 23 February, prior to yesterday's summit.

The man who helped organize the meeting is Pavol Demes, head of the Slovak branch of the U.S. German Marshall Fund. He told RFE/RL that Bush's decision to meet some of the leading democracy advocates of the region before his speech on one of Bratislava's main squares and before his meeting with Putin was highly symbolic. Demes said the decision was evidence of Bush's genuine commitment to supporting the struggle for freedom in the region. He said the list of invitees also demonstrates that the current U.S. president understands this struggle for freedom in broad historical terms.

The activists ranged in age from 87 to 31 years old. Some fought against the Nazis, while others, like Giga Bokeria of Georgia -- one of the key figures behind the youth Kmara movement -- triumphed in their fight against authoritarianism only very recently. Others, like Belarus's Zhanna Litvina, are still fighting. Demes explained, saying: " wanted to meet with people who represent, through their lives, some of the values which he is trying to articulate and explain. And I think that this idea shows that the struggle for democracy in Europe is not something which is very recent and is taking place in a country like Belarus and Ukraine and Moldova, but that the struggle for democracy is an on-going effort from the past and will continue in the future."

<snip>

Demes said the rules of diplomacy dictated Bush's cordial tone at the news conference with Putin yesterday but that he was convinced of the U.S. president's commitment to upholding democracy. Bush told participants in the meeting that for him, personally, the spreading of freedom and democracy across the world is his foremost priority.

<snip>

"And President Bush, in both his Inaugural Address and his State of the Union address, mentioned that besides the war or terrorism, spreading democracy and democracy assistance will form a pillar of his foreign policy. I think that this is very good news for countries of Central and Eastern Europe and, I would say, beyond."

Andrei Sannikov, the international coordinator of Belarus's Charter 97 democracy movement (inspired by the communist-era Charter 77 movement in the former Czechoslovakia), took part in the Bratislava conference of democracy activists. He did not meet Bush personally but also praised the U.S. president's efforts on behalf of those struggling to bring democracy to their own countries. The fact the geopolitics sometimes overshadows concern for human rights is a sad reality, he said -- which concerns both Europe and America.

"This doesn't only concern America. It also concerns certain European states," Sannikov said. "Yes, we encounter this. It's a fact of life. We understand that -- especially in relation to Russia --which is rich in natural resources, 'realpolitik' often takes precedence. But this always leads to negative consequences. And you cannot build long-term relations on this." Sannikov said he believes Bush understands this, and said he is glad that the U.S. president, since he began his second term in office, has publicly put democracy and freedom at the top of his agenda. Sannikov said this gives Belarusians and others who have yet to live in free societies hope. And, he said, it gives them a powerful argument, should America and others seek to renege on their promise.
