Political music favorites you love that are recent releases
I know...plenty of old school political protest music can be found...Dylan, Guthrie, etc.

But does anyone have any political music faves/artists that they'd like to recommend?

I still nibble on Bruce Cockburn's latest release "You've Never Seen Anything" and his tune:

Trickle Down

Picture on magazine boardroom pop star
Pinstripe prophet of peckerhead greed
You say “Trust me with the money -- the keys to the universe”
Trickle down will give us everything we need

Brand new century private penitentiary
Bank vault utopia padded for the few
And it’s tumors for the masses coughing for the masses
Earphones for the masses and they all serve you

Trickle down give ‘em the business
Trickle down supposed to give us the goods
Cups held put to catch a bit of the bounty
Trickle down everywhere trickle down blood

What used to pass for education now looks more like ignoration
Take the people’s money and slip it to the corporation
Yellow rain golden shower pesticide firepower
Summon feudal demons of sweatshop subjugation

Workfare foul air homeless beggars everywhere
Picturephone aristocrats lounge around the pool
Captains of industry smiling beneficently
Leaky hull supertanker ship of fools

Trickle down etc …

Takeover takedown big buck shakedown
Schoolyard pusher of the anything-for-profit
First got to privatize then you get to piratize
Hooked on avarice – how do we get off it?

Timely tunes are the most relevant these days...

1. Bright Eyes: "When the President Talks to God"
Edited on Sun Mar-13-05 08:37 PM by rucky

"When The President Talks To God"

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

2. I have loved Bruce, like, forever
From hearing the first album back in 1972. Thanks for the link... will have to get this one. Lately, on the train to work, have been enjoying "The Charity Of Night".

5. This is a really strong Bruce release
So many good tunes... Trickle Down pays dark homage to Raygun and goes from there...

3. Eminem "Square Dance"

Never been the type to bend or budge
The wrong button to push,
No friend of Bush
I'm the centerpiece, your the Maltese.
I am a pittbull off his leash,
All this peace talk can cease.
All these people I had to leave in limbo,
I'm back now,
I've come to release this info
I'll be brief and let me just keep shit simple.
Can-a-bitch don't want no beef with Slim?
Noooo!
Not even on my radar,
So won't you please jump off my dick
Lay off and stay off,
And follow me as I put these crayons to chaos from seance to seance,
Aw-a-aw-ch-a-aw

Y'all C'mon now,
Let's all get on down,
Let's do-si-do now,
We gon' have a good ol' time.
Don't be scared, cus there ain't nuttin' to worry 'bout,
Let your hair down,
And square dance with me!

Let your hair down to the track,
Yeah kick on back.
Boo!
The boogies monster of rap,
Yeah the man's back
With a plan to ambush this Bush administration,
Mush the Senate's face in and push this generation,
Of kids to stand and fight for the right to say something you might not like,

This white hot light,
That i'm under,
No wonder,
I look so sunburnt,
Oh no,
I won't leave no stone unturned,
Oh no i won't leave,
Wont go nowhere,
Do-si-do,
Oh, yo, ho, hello there
Oh yeah don't think I won't go there,
Go to the Beirut and do a show there
Yah you laugh till your muthafuckin' ass gets drafted,
While you're at band camp thinkin' the crap can't happen,
Till you fuck around,
Get an anthrax napkin,
Inside a package wrapped in saran Wrap wrapping,
Open the plastic and then you stand back gasping,
Fuckin' assassins hijackin' Amtracks crashin,
All this terror America demands action,
Next thing you know you've got Uncle Sam's ass askin'
To join the army or what you'll do for there Navy.
You just a baby,
Gettin' recruited at eighteen,
You're on a plane now,
Eatin their food and their baked beans.
I'm 28 ,
They gon take you 'fore they take me
Crazy insane or insane crazy?
When i say Hussein you say Shady,
My views aint changed still Inhumane,
Wait,
Arraigned two days late,
The date's today,
Hang me!

Nothin' moves me more than a groove the soothes me,
Nothin'soothes me more than a groove
that boosts me,
Nothin' boosts me more,
Or suits me beautifully,
There's nothin' you can do to me,
Stab me,
Shoot me,
Physcotic,
Hypnotic, product I got the antibotic.
Ain't nobody hotter and so on and yada yada
God i talk alot of hem-de-lay-la-la-la,
oochie walla um da dah da dah da but you gotta gotta,
Keep movin',
There's more music to make,
Keep makin' new shit,
Produce hits to break
the monotony,
What's gotten into me?
Drug's, rock and Hennessey,
Thug like I'm 'Pac on my enemies,
On your knees,
Got you under seige,
Somebody you would give a lung to be
hun-ga-ry,
Like a fuckin' younger me,
Fuck the fee,
I can get you jumped for free,
Yah buddy,
Laugh it's funny,
I have the money to have you killed by somebody who has nothing,
I'm past bluffing,
Pass the K-Y,
Let's get ready for some intense,
serious ass fucking!

Dr. Dre., wants to square with me,
Nasty Nas, wants to square dance with me,
X to the Z, wants to square dance with me,
Busta Rhymes, wants to square dance with me,
Cana-bitch won't square dance with me,
Fan-a-bitch, won't square dance with me,
Canada-bis, don't want no parts of me,
Dirty Dozen wants to square dance with you-----YEE-HAW!!!

4. Ministry did a CD last year called
"Houses of the Mole" that was basically an anti-Dubya
rampage.

4. Wrong

You're wrong everytime
You're wrong everytime

What makes you think you've got a god-given right
For killing people in a needless fight
You're like a rapist with a target in sight
Democracy

Whoever told you that you were bright
The skull and bones the conservative right
You're like a plague turning day into night
Atrocity

14. Yeah, you got the right part of the album cover.
I forgot about that little pic.

They've come through Portland, before. Next
time they hit town I should get really, well,
you know, and just go.

I'd love to crawl inside Al's head to see
how he comes up with this music that
channels my anger so well. It's like the
same tape is going on in my head, except
I can't hear it as well and he can.

6. Bad Religion's latest "The Empire Strikes First"
Is a very cool political album. Very anti-administration. Good songs being the title track and Let Them Eat War

The Thermals latest record, "Fuckin A" is also quite politically charged. The best song being God and Country, which features a particularly powerful lyrical bit ("Pray for a new state/ Pray for assassination")

Fuckin A has been in constant rotation since I got it. Great stuff.

8. Green Day's latest "American Idiot"
I've been playing it almost exclusively for three weeks now. The whole CD just blends together. It won a Grammy for Best Rock Album a couple of weeks ago. I read a review that says it is a rock opera sort of along the lines "Tommy", by The Who. It really kicks ass!

Sage Francis - "Makeshift Patriot" is an absolutely amazing song (written only days after 9/11).

Dead Prez should have some new stuff.

Anti-flag - I don't really listen to them but they're well liked.

Rage Against the Machine is relatively recent (I guess). The best IMO.

That's all I can think of right now.

edit: Incubus had a song "Megalomaniac", which was anti-Bush. It was pretty good and pretty recent.

The Irrationality Of Rationality, Franco Un-American

"Idiots Are Taking Over"

it's not the right time to be sober
now the idiots have taken over
spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?

Mensa membership exceeding
tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding
Watson, it's really elementary
the industrial revolution
has flipped the bitch on evolution
the benevolent and wise are being thwarted, ostracized, what a bummer
the world keeps getting dumber
insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason

darwin's rollin over in his coffin
the fittest are surviving much less often
now everything seems to be reversing, and it's worsening
someone flopped a steamer in the gene pool
now angry mob mentality's no longer the exception, it's the rule
and im startin to feel a lot like charlton heston
stranded on a primate planet
apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
with generals and the armies that obeyed them
followers following fables
philosophies that enable them to rule without regard

there's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
political scientists get the same one vote as some Arkansas inbred
majority rule, don't work in mental institutions
sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions

what are we left with?
a nation of god-fearing pregnant nationalists
who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland
pass on traditions
how to get ahead religions
And prosperity via simpleton culture

the idiots are takin over <[br />

"The Irrationality Of Rationality"

Frank, the new CEO had to answer to the board.
The board was getting anxious, and the shareholders were
on a bed, legs in air, ass-cheeks open wide
They were about to get fucked like it was their first time.
When one makes 20 million, ten thousand people lose.
What keeps that one from swallowing a shotgun?

Dan, the company man, felt loyalty to the core.
After 16 years of service, and a family to support
He actually started to believe the weaponry and chemicals were for national defense.
'Cause Danny had a mortgage, and a boss to answer to.
The guilty don't feel guilty, they learn not to.

Helen is living in her car, trying to feed her kids.
She got laid off at work, and her house was repossessed.
It's hard to think clearly when it's 38 degrees.
Desperate people have been known to render desperate deeds.
But when she shot that family and moved into their home,
The paper read she suffered from dementia.

"Franco Un-American"

I never thought about the universe, it made me feel small
Never thought about the problems of this planet at all
Global warming, radio-active sites
Imperialistic wrongs and animal rights! No!

Why think of all the bad things when life is so good?
Why help with an 'am' when there's always a 'could'?
Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea
Outside of California, it's foreign policy

I don't want changes, I have no reactions
Your dilemmas are my distractions

That's no way to go, Franco Un-American
No way to go, Franco Un-American
No way to go, Franco Un-American
No way to go, Franco, Franco Un-American

I never looked around, never second-guessed
Then I read some Howard Zinn now I'm always depressed
And now I can't sleep from years of apathy
All because I read a little Noam Chomsky

I'm eating vegetation, 'cause of Fast Food Nation
I'm wearing uncomfortable shoes 'cause of globalization
I'm watching Michael Moore expose the awful truth
I'm listening to Public Enemy and Reagan Youth

I see no world peace 'cause of zealous armed forces
I eat no breath-mints 'cause their from de-hoofed horses
Now I can't believe; what an absolute failure
The president's laughing 'cause we voted for Nader

That's no way to go, Franco Un-American
No way to go, Franco Un-American
No way to go, Franco Un-American
Where can we go, Franco Un-American

I want to move north and be a Canadian
Or hang down low with the nice Australians
I don't want to be another 'I-don't-care-ican'
What are we gonna do Franco, Franco Un-American

"Re-gaining Unconsciousness"

First they put away the dealers,
keep our kids safe and off the street.
Then they put away the prostitutes,
keep married men cloistered at home.
Then they shooed away the bums,
then they beat and bashed the queers,
turned away asylum-seekers,
fed us suspicions and fears.
We didn't raise our voice,
we didn't make a fuss.
It's funny there was no one left to notice
when they came for us.
Looks like witches are in season,
you better fly your flag and be aware
of anyone who might fit the description,
diversity is now our biggest fear.
Now with our conversations tapped
and our differences exposed,
how ya supposed to love your neighbor
with our minds and curtains closed?
We used to worry 'bout big brother,
now we got a big father and an even bigger muther.
And still you believe
this aristocracy gives a fuck about you.
They put the mock in demockracy
and you swallowed every hook.
The sad truth is you would rather
follow the school into the net
cuz swimming alone at sea
is not the kind of freedom you actually want.
So go back to your crib and suck on a tit
go bask in the warmth of your diaper.
You're sitting in shit and piss
while sucking a giant pacifier,
a country of adult infants.
A legion of mental midgets
all regaining their unconsciousness

"American Errorist (I Hate Haters)"

It’s ok, allow yourself a little hate
Hatred is not so bad when directed at injustice
You can turn the other cheek, just don’t turn the other way

Enemy of the planet we finally have a common aim
a reason to forget about our differences
and stand as a united front

It’s up to us, we must expose,
Humiliate American errorists
We’ll start with one
The war has just begun
