Has anyone seen the United Church of Christ commercial?
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 05:43 PM by MissMarple
"No matter who you are, no matter where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here."

www.ucc.org

I saw it this morning on BBCAmerica, I believe. The visuals are great, it's almost scary what a simple black T-shirt can do.

I know this is primarily a religious commercial, but the political implications are quite clear. It's as if the real Christians are finding a national voice. We should cheer them on. :-)

Just click on "watch the commercial".

2. It's brilliant. And it's a smack in the face to so-called
"Christians" like Falwell, Robertson, Dobson, et al.

What we really need is mainstream churches, their ministers and their congregations to start screaming their lungs out about the hijacking of Christianity by a lunatic fringe.

3. You don't know the Church of Christ like I know the Church of Christ.
This is marketing and nothing else. My sister-in-law is a member and believe me, she believes that the point of welcoming gays is to "convert" them, not only to COC but heterosexuality.

If you demand that someone be something other than what they are, that's about as close to hating someone as one can come.

4. COC is not UCC
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 06:02 PM by madison2000
The United Church of Christ is inclusive and they mean it. There are plenty of gay and lesbian couples at my church and at all the UCC churches I have been to. That doesn't mean that some congregations aren't more liberal or conservative than others, but this denomination is absolutely NOT about converting homosexuals to heterosexuality.

Edit: See for yourself

9. I stand corrected. It's hard to keep up with all the Christs and Churches
My sister-in-law is ICC, now that I think of it, the so called "Boston Movement." It's a cult. They hate gays.

Personally I have no use for churches or christs of any type, since overall, with some exceptions (but not many) they are either immoral or useless.

It's pretty clear to me that to the extent that there was a person named Jesus, he had no special connection to the deeper points of the universe, its origins or its ends. In fact, neither did the rather obnoxious creature described in the so called "Old Testament," that'd be Yahweh. Mohammed neither. Buddha neither. And so on.

8. Wrong church. Both have christ and church but different places
UCC is fine, even with me. I was raised in a church that joined UCC and am ok with them, they are good guys my father would say. Gays is fine. Multi-everything is fine and you don't have to believe the cross thing either (resurrection).

10. This campaign was tested about a year or so ago
in Cleveland Ohio (home of the UCC) and some other cities. It is an effective ad though it still isn't run on CBS or NBC which is pretty dumb.

11. I've seen it, but I don't remember on which channel.
UCC really does welcome all people. One of the pagan groups in Portland holds their public rituals at a UCC church.

12. I went to one of these churches this past Sunday. It was wonderful
I don't think the word 'God' came up. Your choice of theism or no theism is entirely up to you. VERY refreshing. All sorts of people there. Lot's of laughter. Lots of activism brochures and stuff for hunger civil rights, etc.
