Kerry Campaigns for Kids in Austin
Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 12:29 PM by cestpaspossible
Former Presidential candidate John Kerry brought a different campaign to Austin Saturday, a campaign to get health coverage for more american children. The Massachusetts senator, speaking at the U-T Recreation Center, declared that 11-million children are uninsured, 1.4 million of them in Texas, ranking the state as second worst, behind California. Kerry is proposing legislation for the federal government to take over medicaid responsibilities from states. Surveys show that 88% of uninsured children in Texas have at least one working parent. Hidalgo and El Paso counties rank as having the most uninsured children in Texas.

Going to places like Texas and talking about kid's health care may not seem like a glamourous task, but it is the kind of thing we have to do if we are going to win the long-term struggle.

1. This is great to hear. We have to rebuild in the south and we
have to be there to talk these folks. It appears as though he had a great turnout. Bravo Kerry!

3. WOW!
Nice attitude. :eyes: If you paid attention he's covering that issue too. He's on top of all the major issues right now... maybe you did not get the memo.

5. Why don't you address that with Clinton and Boxer too?
They are co-sponsoring the legislation that Kerry is co-sponsoring.

11. This is so wrong - Kerry was the candidate running for President
In 2003, he was merely a potential candidate and in fact was given no chance by Dec 2003. Blame the DNC. Most of the problems need to be dealt with at the state level, because the states run elections. Before you blame Kerry for not fixing this in 2003, ask yourselves what Dean, Clark, Edwards etc were doing to fix it. (The answer for the same reason, they like Kerry were developing stump speeches, raising money and trying to get support - which is what candidates do.)

Kerry's career could go on for decades, especially if he opts not to run for President in 2008. No one in MA is saying he is even remotely likely to lose his Senate seat if he runs just for Senate in 2008.

8. Anyone who says ignore the children for their own interests
needs their head examined. You must not have any kids yourself.

9. You don't have to have kids to care about kids.
Even if you are acting solely from self-interest, it's still to your benefit to have a healthy, well-educated younger generation. No man is an island, and all that....

19. I'm sorry
but I'm sick of people hijacking each and every topic and turning it over to voter fraud. Look, I get it that your worried about it, and I don't think your worries are misplaced, but that doesn't mean you need to go into every topic and change it over to how democrats are just wasting their time talking about that when they should be devoting every waking moment to voter fraud. You don't add anything to the conversation, and you're just annoying.

20. If nothing else, it's a bit monotonous
They either get hyjacked by the IWR or the voter fraud tangent.

We're intelligent here on DU. We don't need daily reminders. The memory is still intact.

Twenty-five hundred to three thousand people started lining up at 7 AM on Saturday morning! We have a thread with some pictures over in the Texas Forum.

15. Kerry, Feingold, and Dean are reaching out to
the so-called 'red states'.... I'd like to see some other Dems follow their lead...

16. Reaching out to red states on these issues makes sense
The red states are, in general, poorer than the blue states and often have less progressive state benefits than the blue states. If Kerry, Feingold, Dean and any other Democrats can see and talk to enough red staters maybe they can break some of the polarization. At this point, I realize that Kerry was speaking to the Democratic minority in Texas, but the approximately 1,500 people will probably talk to at least some friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers etc. possibly any positive comments they have will work to the benefit of all Democrats.

17. Plus even the reddest Republican understands taking care of kids.
It's called 'activating the nurturant parent frame' by Lakoff.
