Other Quayle urged to run for governor

Political Insider is a tongue-in-cheek look at the past week in Arizona politics.
Quayle for governor? No, not that one . . . There seems to be a rumor every week about some top-flight Republican being desperately wooed to run against Janet Napolitano in 2006. The latest is Marilyn Quayle, the smart, politically savvy wife of former Vice President Dan Quayle. This one ain't idle gossip.
GOP Chairman Matt Salmon spoke to Quayle on Friday and the two had an encouraging 60-minute chat. The story in GOP circles goes like this: Some Republican big shots had been fishing to see if her husband was interested in the '06 race. And he basically told everyone, "Don't ask me, ask my wife."
<snip>
Salmon, who lost a nail-biter to Napolitano in 2002, gushed about the political possibilities of a Quayle candidacy.
"I have to tell you that if someone of her talent and credibility enters this race, it is most definitely a horse race," Salmon said. "When people realize this is possible, there will be folks all over the state who try to encourage her to run. Somebody of her caliber in the race is more than I could hope for."
