Companies ponder how to defend against Anti-Republican Backlash
April 26, 2005
An Little Known Meeting and Other Updates

The California Chamber of Commerce is holding a rather innocuous sounding conference this week which ends tomorrow called the "Advocacy Council Members Only: Spring Retreat." I heard through the rumormill that one of the topics of discussion during this meeting is how companies can defend themselves against campaigns like BuyBlue.

Now I don't know whether they spent 2 hours on this or 2 minutes, but that is sort of irrelevant in my opinion. If we have managed to get on the radar of the Chamber of Commerce as something worth discussing strategy on, that means one thing - every one of us that has written a letter, sent a fax, made a phone call or switched because of the ratings presented here deserves a pat on the back. That means companies are not only listening but they are at least mildly concerned. At this point in our evolution I'll consider "mildly concerned" an accomplishment.

I would have liked to speak at this function but unfortunately it wouldn't have been possible due to things going on with my day job. However, I have thought a little bit about what I'd say given the opportunity. I won't write out some long speech here, but the answer is pretty simple - get out of politics. Every company out there wants to bring as many loyal consumers as possible into the fold. Therefore, I think that many companies will someday realize that it doesn't pay to buy politicians and risk alienating potentially half of their consumer base. Until that day comes, we'll continue to shop our politics as much as possible.

The other big news item is that we are currently working on putting together our approach for local companies. It is too soon to really divulge many details there but with any luck you'll see this before the end of 2005. You'll definitely be hearing more about it in the coming weeks and months.

Finally, I wanted to list a the updates since the last time I posted them. I'll keep the snark to a minimum tonight since I'm a little wrecked after a long day and too much time spent in an airport or in the air. So here they are.

Quiznos, Caribou Coffee Company (100% blue), Menard's, 7-Eleven, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, Goodrich Corporation, Elephant Bar.

I did want to say something about Comcast. Based on these numbers they do make for an alternative to SBC for internet service. Here in the bay area they have been running a pretty agressive campaign to get people to switch from DSL (cable modem service was not previously available in many areas), so it is a good opportunity to send a message.

Overstock.com, Abercrombie & Fitch, RE/MAX International (if you want to see why campaign finance reform is important check out their soft money contributions from previous years), Dollar Tree Stores, Xerox, H&R Block, Allstate, Bob Evans Farms (Mimi's Cafe).

What's in your wallet? Hopefully not a Capital One card. Send that card back to them in a letter in little pieces and switch over to a Visa or American Express card instead.

That's all for tonight. What's on your mind?

3. Me too
I think it's important to let people know that we're making an impact. I let everyone know exactly why I'm shopping someplace rather than someplace else.

That the CoC is getting involved shows it's having a noticable effect.

9. Now I'm confused.
I was browsing the "bluest" and "reddest" lists on that site, and companies are turing up opposite to what I'd heard elsewhere.

Overstock.com is listed as blue, and I thought they were red as red gets?! and I thought Target was blue, but I see it on the red list.

I clicked through on a few of the links and they are all over the board contribution-wise.

Xerox Rating: Light Red - 39 %

RE/MAX International currently has a 0% BuyBlue rating due to political contributions for the 2003-2004 election cycle. RE/MAX International executives contributed solely and heavily to Republican politicians in the last election cycle. As it turns out, campaign finance law reforms have been a good thing in the case of RE/MAX International, their executives used to contribute large amounts of soft money. RE/MAX International does not have a political action committee.

23. Overstock.com, Inc.
Tuesday's release of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" to DVD is getting special treatment at online discount shop Overstock.com, but it may not be the type of attention the director would appreciate.

The Web merchant is promoting the DVD release of the most commercially successful documentary ever right alongside a relatively unknown one called "Fahrenhype 9/11," which Overstock describes as "a new documentary that challenges the assertions of Michael Moore in his highly publicized film."

Overstock is featuring a side-by-side promotion of each film on its front page, framed by text that reads: "Where do you stand?" and a link to the online movie trailer for "Fahrenhype." The Overstock site also touted itself as the exclusive online distributor of the DVD, which is also available at some Blockbuster and Hollywood Video stores.

<snip>

Overstock's exclusive deal with the producers of "Fahrenhype" has nothing to do with Patrick Byrne, the company's chief executive officer, and his ties to the Republican Party, Blevins said. Byrne recently donated $75,000 to Utah Republican gubernatorial candidate Jon Huntsman Jr., more than any other nonfamily donor. Blevins said Byrne has also donated to the Democratic Party.

HOW TO READ THIS CHART: This chart lists the top donors to these committees during the 2004 election cycle.

Contributions may come from the organizations themselves or its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.

NOTE: For ease of identification, the 527 organization names used in this section are those of the connected organization, rather than the official name of the 527 account. For example, the "NEA Fund for Children and Public Education" is simply listed as "National Education Ass

11. "how companies can defend themselves against campaigns like BuyBlue."
Hey COMPANIES! In case you're still pondering the above question, I'm gonna help you out here:

STOP GIVING MONEY TO REPUBLICANS. STOP TRYING TO BUY CONGRESS.

If you really want to nail it shut, you can also start making sure your workers are all paid a living wage and that your practices don't poison the earth!

(I always try to be helpful wherever I can. ;) )

21. I think donating to Rick Santorum should count as "Double-Red"
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 02:21 PM by IanDB1
Donating $1,000 to Santorum should count the same as donating $2,000 to Bush.

If you don't live in Pennsylvania, but you contribute to Santorum anyway, then it should count as $4,000 worth of red-donations.

RICK SANTORUM (R-PA)

35. agree with your points, plus
Don't look for tax cuts. Demand to pay your fair share.
Don't lobby for specific legislation to benefit your business.

Expect to sacrifice during "wartime".
Support the troops.
Support the nation.
Insist on paying your part in fair taxes!

You are fortunate to do business in this country, and you should expect to pay taxes.

24. I shop ONLY Blue Stores & NOT Red Supporters
Family and friends, alike. Many in my area I pass by now. And I make it a point to do monthly re-checks of those blue-buying sites to stay informed, up-to-date, and as an added reminder.

Besides, Bush and Republicans have us so in debt, down-hearted and literally terrorized, we don't shop like before. Noticed in last several weeks alone, local stores generally with average crowds, have dropped so dramatically you'd think they were closed for business.

Companies supporting the Republican should re-think what they're doing, supporting a Regime hell-bent on destroying our country while dividing us like never before seen since the Civil War.

where I live in Florida! I'm stuck, but at least I saw a 53% rating, makes me feel a teeny weeny bit better, I've been bashing them for some time now.

According to Open Secrets UDF was one of the top contributors to the partisan smear campaign that was thourghly discredited by both the New York Times and the Washington Post. This email is to let UDF know that I will never spend another dime in a UDF or patronize any other Lindner business including Chiquita, Great American Ball Park or Great American Insurance.

39. Organize a "pro-family" boycott of the vaccine manufacturers
All three major vaccine manufacturers "support the homosexual agenda" by providing same-sex partner benefits for their employees

One of them even covers fertility treatments that leave extra embryos left-over to be murdered in "The Fetal Holocaust."

So we need to convince the anti-gay fundie bigots to refuse to be vaccinated.

Otherwise they're killing babies and destroying marriage.

Two birds, one stone.

Oh, and as for gasoline, Hess is 98% Blue!

41. Update: Letter from KB Toy
Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 14:55:37 -0400
From: webmaster@kbtoys.com
Subject: KB Toys

KB Toys does not contribute to any political campaigning.

With more than 600 stores nationwide, we receive numerous donation requests
on a daily basis from organizations near each of those locations.
Unfortunately, we cannot fulfill all the requests that we get, nor do we
feel that we can choose from those groups, since all of them are very
worthwhile.

For this reason we have made the decision to support several specific
national 501(c)(3) groups that support children?s initiatives. We feel
that these organizations can reach a broad base of children throughout the
country.

Mr. McGrady was a member of Consolidated Stores which was KB Toys parent
company 5 years ago and he was not the CEO of KB Toys as your email states.
Consolidated Stores sold KB Toys 5 years ago.

www.kbtoys.com web site was purchased over a year ago by a separate company
and is no longer affiliated with the mall based/ strip center KB Toys
stores.

Thank you for your time.

KB Toys
