Virtual March to Stop Global Warming with RFK Jr, Wes Clark, and others
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 06:49 PM by Jai4WKC08
Just got alerted to this from WesPAC www.securingamerica.com

What is the March?
THE STOP GLOBAL WARMING VIRTUAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON is a bi-partisan effort to bring all Americans together in one place, proving there is a vast consensus among Americans that global warming is here now and it is time for our country to start addressing it. With the support of leading scientists, political and religious leaders, prominent Americans and concerned citizens, the Virtual March on Washington will move across the United States via the Internet from one town to the next, showing the evidence of global warming's alarming progress, and highlighting real people's concerns and real solutions along the way.

Through our interactive map, you can track the progress of the March in real time as more people join, see the path on which we're traveling together widen, and read the stories from March stops across the country. We will march to Indianapolis and visit the Indy Racing League where all of the racecars will soon be converted to run on biofuels; in Colorado, where an elementary school is purchasing 100% of its electricity from wind power (saving 420,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per year); and to New York City to visit the ground-breaking green rebuilding of the World Trade Towers; amongst many more destinations.

Over the next year, the March will travel across the U.S., gaining strength in numbers and raising awareness about global warming. On Earth Day 2006, the March will arrive in Washington D.C. to use the strength of our numbers to urge:

1. The president to initiate a real plan of action to address global warming.

2. Congress to enact new laws to reduce global warming pollution from U.S. power plants, factories and automobiles.

3. U.S. businesses to start a new industrial revolution of clean energy products that will reduce our oil dependence and global warming pollution.

2. It starts in Shishmaref, Alaska. That is the butt end of the world.
They are having to move villages now up here and the bears are out. Join and help us save ourselves before its too late.

These grizzly bears, a sow and three cubs were photographed out the window of my friend's house. They live three miles from me. These bears should still be asleep. Now they are out and having to make due until there is food available. This is so damned sad.

3. Make it so!
With one planet to call home, you'd think people would be ready to wise up.

4. Signed up
and emailed to 15 friends. Thanks Jai! Love that General Clark is part of this!

It's absurd that the energy bill they just passed is so void of any solutions. We're definitely moving backwards with this Regime! Guess we're back to about 1970 at this point...

Thank God for forward thinking people getting together and working for change!

5. RFK is a hypocrite! Wind power
is for poor people.

He opposes windmills because it will spoil his view, hurt his Cape Cod property values and spoil his yachting. A real man of the people. HYPOCRITE!

Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council (where Robert Kennedy works), World Wildlife Fund, Public Interest Research Group and Friends of the Earth all support the windmills.

9. can you provide a citation of RFK Jrs. opposition to wind power? . . .
I know some of the Kennedy clan aren't interested in wind farms obstructing their ocean views, but I hadn't heard that he was among them . . . got a source for this info? . . .

12. Here you go

Ted opposes it as well:

I know there is no perfect solution, but the downside from windpower is so much better than oil tankers and those risks.

14. That's bullshit! Have you ever listened to him talk about it?
There are plenty of places to put windmills. No need to put them there. Right wing loves that argument. Get your facts straight and stop believing bullshit.

15. RFK prayer - Lord, give us wind power -- but just not here!
Read this article, then talk about BS.

I haven't heard him speak on the subject, but his actions speak loudly. Anywhere but where I live.

"It remains to be seen whether latter-day environmentalism will rouse itself to protect the whole earth -- or degenerate into a protection scheme for the pretty views of well-to-do landowners."

10. Clark: "Why I am Marching" (excellent reframing of the issue)
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 12:08 AM by Clarkie1
I love how he links global warming to national security:

Why Am I Marching?
After thirty-four years as an officer in the United States Army, I know something about marching. From West Point to the West Wing, it has been an honor for me to march shoulder-to-shoulder with the men and women who make up the backbone of our nation’s security. Many people do not understand that global warming and environmental policy are indeed national security matters because it’s hard to see with the naked eye. We can see the impact of global warming on our lands, skies and waters. However, we have to look harder to see its effect on the geopolitical paradigm. As the average temperatures continue to rise around the world, the ice caps melt leading to reduced salinity levels in the ocean; higher sea levels; harsher winter weather, reduced soil moisture, more intense wind conditions. These conditions lead to drought and food shortages, decreased access to fresh drinking water and less secure access to energy supplies. The pressure caused by this phenomenon is a destabilizing force in global politics that could lead to civil unrest and international conflict.

So, stopping global warming is not just about saving the environment for the hunters, fisherman, hikers and the other outdoor enthusiasts of today and tomorrow. Global warming is a matter of national security. Will we live in a world where we must fight our neighbors for fresh water and food? Or will we take the lead now and leave to our children and grandchildren a world better off than the one we inherited from our parents?

Shoulder-to-shoulder, let’s march together to save what God loaned us, so our children and their children will live in a world we would recognize a hundred years from now. No excuses. No apologies. Take the first step today. We can’t do it without you.

16. Clark during the campaign, from the Carbon Coaltition
Carbon Coalition - New Hampshire - Fall 2003
Volunteer Impressions

Quote:
I saw Clark at Pierce Atwood offices Tuesday. When I said in the Q&A that I wanted to ask him about climate change, he said "Good--everybody wants to hear about Iraq and the economy but there are some other really important issues," and proceeded to give a little class on how greenhouse gases work to the assembled lawyers. He was mostly right. -- RM

Quote:
At today's event, General Clark released his plan for dealing with air pollution. The plan referred, in passing, to climate change. During the Q&A, General Clark answered six or seven different specific questions on carbon pollution, climate change, and the Kyoto Treaty. He was ready with a great deal of detailed and specific information, asserted that whether or not Kyoto needs to be changed (he did not specifically state that he believes it is flawed, only that it might currently be a hard sell) he believes that it is essential that the USA show the world it is willing to lead on global warming. Not all of the questions were softballs, but he took them all in stride and gave substantive answers. I was impressed at his breadth of knowledge on this and other air quality and environmental issues. -- BBC
