This is a stretch, but I was just wondering if anyone thinks there might be a connection between the faulty intelligence sources surrounding the German discotheque bombing in 1986, and the sources of our faulty intelligence about WMD's in Iraq.

This is just a "fishing expedition" on my part.

1. Don't forget the Naples USO in 88
The problem back then in the European theater is that security aboard military installations and places that the military frequented outside the gates was virtually nonexistent. Sigint was also not as well tracked then, if you had criminal intent, it was easier to avoid detection with simple precautions.

But those two events in Europe (as well as a number of others) were a wake up call....

Your first link isn't working, btw.

2. Bad Intelligence
As for attacking Iraq, George W. Bush had the ultimate responsibility of getting his facts straight before attacking. Whatever attempts are made to cover up his actions, I keep reminding everyone that he had the ultimate responsibility. Instead, the Republicans, with many Democratic accomplices, committed aggression against Iraq.
A few more days of fact checking, like the French and Germans wanted, would have shown no excuse for attacking. This war was in no way any kind of mistake of the Intelligence agencies. It was planned in advance.
Oh, yeah, why do we still have troops in Iraq and Afghanistan without protective vests and armored vehicles? Don't the people running this war see the safety of our forces to be important?
More than two years and nearly 1600 dead Americans, and when does this end? How many more Iraqis are going to die at the hands of scared witless, trigger happy service men and women?
