GOP Plan to "Fix" the Dems
The stakes in politics are about to get a lot higher.

The partisan battles in the coming weeks -- on judges, Social Security and the future of Tom DeLay -- are part of a larger struggle in which Republicans are seeking to establish themselves as the dominant party in American politics. Essential to their quest is persuading Democrats, or at least a significant number in their ranks, to accept long-term minority status.

The current acrimony in politics is incomprehensible unless it is understood as the inevitable next act of a long-term struggle. Its ferocity arises from the Democrats' refusal to accept the role assigned them by their opponents. They are taking a stand across a broad front not simply to "obstruct" current GOP designs but to reverse a Republican political offensive that began during Bill Clinton's presidency.

1. He says "obstruct" like that's a bad thing.

Obstructing the republican lunacy is the BARE MINIMUM of what I expect from our Democratic lawmakers. If they can go further and carve out a few gains, so much the better. But if I could give the Dems one marching order, it would be this: Do anything you need to do to stop 'em dead in their tracks. Gridlock until 2006 is fine by me.

9. I don't think he was really using it in a bad way.
I think he's giving the Dem's a lot of credit, actually. He's saying that they're not cowards.

2. One wonders why the ABCNote today did not expand on their EJ comment
today -

EJ hit the nail on the head - and the media more or less ignores.

3. It's amazing it took them this long to figure this out. The repubs have
been after the Democrats' financial base since * got into office. They have gone after unions and lawyers. They have pretty much eliminated the bankruptcy lawyers from what I've heard.

They are also sending high paying jobs overseas as fast as they can. That could be another way - bankrupt people who would support the Democrats.

* and group have done a lot that shows exactly what they have in mind. The invasion of Iraq was easy to see long before it started. I wonder why the Democrats don't understand what's going on. They have pretty much supported this jerk since he got into office.

15. True, the plan is to defund the opposition
Grover Norquist (yick) wrote an article detailing how to totally defund the Democrats. It's a good read and worth a google search.

4. Now they're coming after my cojones. I gotta draw the line.
Even if it's just "figuratively" speaking.

From the article:

Grover Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform and a leading figure in both the DeLay and Bush political operations, chose more colorful post-election language to describe the future. "Once the minority of House and Senate are comfortable in their minority status, they will have no problem socializing with the Republicans," he told Richard Leiby of The Post. "Any farmer will tell you that certain animals run around and are unpleasant. But when they've been 'fixed,' then they are happy and sedate. They are contented and cheerful."

If you wonder in the coming weeks why Democrats are so reluctant to give ground, remember Norquist's jocular reference to neutering the opposition party. Democrats are neither contented nor cheerful over the prospect of being "fixed." Should that surprise anyone?

6. I recommended this thread
I think everyone that posts on DU needs to read this, and send it to five of their friends.

Our leadership should also know that we will brook no surrender. We MUST stand up to them. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, our country and our freedom are surely at stake.

14. It's too bad
It's too bad that voting for a third party is throwing your vote away. Now come on people if that doesn't stir up some debate then DU should be ashamed. But just in-case, I've met Nader and he smells and shakes your hand with a limp grip. Let me have it.

7. Gee, ya think?
And maybe it's about time for the major media outlets to quit aiding and abetting this takeover of the government.

The worst news for the GOP imperialists, though, is that Tom Daschle isn't the Senate Minority Leader anymore.

10. It's funny that Repubs are claiming that the Democrats are "fixed"
when they're cutting off they're own balls. They're the emasculate party, not the Democrats.
