Rupert Murdoch's Post publishes front page photos of Saddam in underwear!
Edited on Fri May-20-05 06:39 AM by flpoljunkie

"May 20, 2005 - Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Here's Saddam Hussein, the one-time Butcher of Baghdad, stripped to his tighty whities in an Iraq prison."

http://www.nypost.com

First published in Rupert Murdoch's London Sun. Photos came from an unnamed person in the U. S. miltary who thinks these photos will kill the insurgency.

Will the White House be demanding Rupert Muroch's New York Post apologize for this when the Sunni Baathists ratchet up their insurgency and kill even more of our soldiers and their own Shiite countrymen in Iraq?

10. military hopes "will deal a body blow to the lingering Iraqi insurgency".
well, we will see!

"It may look pretty basic from these , but Saddam is pretty comfortable in there," a soldier who has seen the photos told the newspaper. "Hell, the man's got much more living space than most the GIs out here. You should see the tent I have to share with 30 other guys."

The Sun said it received the pictures from a source in the U.S. military who hoped the release of the pitiful pictures will deal a body blow to the lingering Iraqi insurgency.

"Saddam is just an aging and humble old man now," the source said. "It's over, guys. The evil days of Saddam's Ba'ath Party are never coming back - and here's the proof." Saddam Hussein once ran a tyrannical dictatorship - but now he's been reduced to washing his own socks. The former Butcher of Baghdad sits in a dingy plastic chair in a simple button-down shirt as he does his laundry by hand.

Most Iraqis don't know how Saddam can even sleep at night, but these photos show that when he does get some shut-eye, he bundles up against the cold like a street bum. He may appear harmless, but Saddam is monitored every minute of the day and night, even when he sleeps and uses the bathroom.

9. These knuckle-heads aren't very smart
The more they humanize the guy, the more they make him seem silly, or pathetic, the less people fear and hate the man. I doubt that's what Neocon freaks like Murdoch really want.

15. UK's Guardian: "Sun Under Fire for Saddam Pics"
http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,14173,1488532,00.html

Sun under fire over Saddam pics

Claire Cozens and agencies

Friday May 20, 2005

The US military has condemned the Sun for publishing photographs of a captive Saddam Hussein and said it was "aggressively" investigating who took them.

Today's paper carries a series of photographs showing the former Iraqi dictator in his cell, including one on the front page showing him in his underwear. Another shows him washing clothes under the headline "Tyrant? He's washed up". The Sun says it obtained the photos from "US military sources" who handed them over "in the hope of dealing a body blow to the resistance in Iraq".

<>But in a statement issued today, the American military in Baghdad said the photos violated military guidelines "and possibly Geneva convention guidelines for the humane treatment of detained individuals". "The source of those photos is unknown at this time. It is believed the photos were taken over a year ago."

The US military said it was "aggressively" investigating to determine who took the pictures.

<>The Sun said today it had been told the name and location of the site but was not publishing any details to protect coalition troops from attack.

19. Another picture showing how pathetic Saddam Hussein is
Just like the ones taken after he was captured from his foxhole. He looks so scary evil, doesn't he?

Good thing the US was Saddam's friend when he was armed, dangerous, and killing innocents. It makes so much more sense to sacrifice 1600+ Americans, kill over a 100,000 Iraqis, and spend a billion dollars a week to take him out when he's old, feeble, and boxed in.

He's been in jail for over a year and any dye job would have completely worn off by now -- but the Saddam in this picture and the others in this "series" show a guy with black hair, black moustache and black chest hair.

Is this normal for a 68-year old man?

26. Idiots. US military is source of photos and now will investigate
their release. From Agence France Presse via Yahoo:

...In the accompanying article along with other intimate photographs of him, the newspaper quotes US military sources as saying they handed over the photos in the hope of dealing a body blow to the resistance in Iraq.

<snip>

In Baghdad, a US military spokesman said the military was investigating the photos of Saddam to find out who took them and decide what kind of disciplinary action should be taken.

"There is an investigation," US Staff Sergeant Don Dees told AFP. "A policy prohibits us from exploitation of detainees and that policy is in place to preserve their dignity."

The photos "were taken in clear violation of Department of Defense directives and possibly Geneva Convention guidelines for the humane treatment of detained individuals," a US military statement said.

Leave it to the US to bungle again. Yes, will they jump all over their buddy Murdoch's media empire including the NY Post for publishing the photos?

27. There is NO CLASS with this
Honorable countries used to treat their fallen enemies with respect. It was a way of war, and it showed class. Unfortunately, Rupert Murdoch has no idea what honor means. This is a show of anti-Americanism in it's finest. It is even more of a tragedy that the rest of world will view us as petty and cruel assholes.

28. Okay. So Britain exiled Napolean to Elba Island and gave
him a really fine home to live in. We obviously couldn't do anything that extreme , but it demonstrates the disparity between eras and the ideas of civilizations on how to treat war prisoners...

But for God's sake, how about our military and media having a modicum of CLASS?!?!

Let's have no more occasion for pics of undies or human pyramids, please!

30. 3 points
1. If it was a military person who took and released these photos, then the military is out of control at the lowest and highest levels.

2. I'm guessing that we'll soon be seeing the response of the "terrorists" to these pictures by how their next hostages are treated.

3. Don't expect all that much from Murdock. His satellites beam more porn to hotels than any others. That makes him a pornographer, even more than Larry Flynt.

Did Halliburton get yet ANOTHER no-bid contract? C'mon guys, we know the drill...Friday is the day we get some mumbo-jumbo from D.C. that passes for news, while the stuff that SHOULD be reported coasts under the radar....
