The Vote tomorrow - will it be a roll-call vote? Is The Vote tomorrow?
Edited on Mon May-23-05 06:24 PM by gristy
Where the presiding officer calls each Senator's name and he/she calls out "aye" or "nay"? Or will they each push their damn little buttons on their desk? What time will it start? What is the best way to watch the action on line?

edit: dumbass typo

1. I think all Senate votes are either voice votes or roll call
They don't have "electronic devices" like the House does. Since the voice vote will be close, it'll have to be by roll call, I'd think.

3. The vote will be on Tuesday at noon
it will be broadcast on c-span2. You can watch online at c-span.org then select c-span2

The senate does not vote electronically. There will be a period during which the senators all go up to the desk and indicate their vote. After 10 or 15 minutes, the votes will be read off. Then there is more time for senators who hadn't voted yet or who wish to change their vote to do so. During this second phase the senators' names are read out along with their vote. At the end of that period, the vote will be closed and the total number of ayes and nays will be read.

4. And What About Cloture?
Edited on Mon May-23-05 06:20 PM by Itsthetruth
And what if 60 Senators fail to invoke cloture and continue the debate .... in other words continue to filibuster on the nomination?

6. The Republican plan is that
a point of order will be brought up that judicial filibusters are invalid. Cheney, in his role as the head of the senate, will rule that they are, in fact, invalid. Democrats will appeal the decision and it will be brought to a vote. Points of order votes are not subject to filibusters and require a simple majority to decide. If the Senate votes 50-50 on this point of order, Cheney will cast the deciding vote.

Now, for extra credit: guess which way Cheney will vote.

7. And The Parliamentarian?
And can they ask for a ruling by the Parliamentarian that filibusters are in fact valid?

I assume that at some critical point Democrats will demand that Cheney explain why filibusters on legislation and other presidential appointments are legal why a filibuster is illegal for court nominations.

His response should be interesting and novel.
