CIVIL WAR along religious lines ?
Edited on Wed May-25-05 06:51 AM by steve2470
In 1861, it was along geographic/economic/slavery/political lines. In 200?, would it be along religious lines ? It seems if the fundies continue their aggressive bid for control of the government, that a true civil war could develop eventually. What do you think ?

on edit: added economic, per a poster's suggestion.

1. How do you fight a war with no distinct boundaries
between the two (or more) sides?

You need to figure out some other scenario; otherwise the 24-hour news channels won't know where to send their war correspondents.

What is more likely is what is already occurring--a creeping coup of theocratic dominionists who are currently in the process of consolidating their power through the increased rigging of elections which gets a little worse with each cycle.

After the 2006 midterm elections, commentators will be marveling at how a Congress which had seemingly been held in such contempt by the public now has a 70-30 GOP majority in the U.S. Senate and a 290-145 margin in the House. And, of course, no MSM reporter will be allowed to report on the obvious. Bloggers will blog as they did after November 2004 and after a few weeks everyone will go back to "normal" life in the "homeland" police state.

And I have read studies which indicate pretty much the entire U.S. military leadership is of a neocon imperialist mentality at this point. * and Rummy purged all the officers of the "republic" during the first few years of the first term.

2. If a civil war developed, it would be very messy.
Edited on Wed May-25-05 06:52 AM by steve2470
Except in very very "blue areas" and intensely "red areas", it would be house against house, city against city, etc. Very messy, no distinct lines, I fear for my country.

3. The fundies are not so powerful.
And don't forget to include "economic" lines in 1861. That had a lot to do with it

4. Conclaves Of Dominionists And Non Dominionists

Would quickly develop.

After a few people were killed in any area, the segregation process would begin.

5. Another legacy of the Bush Administration
. . . and his noble attempts to be a "uniter - not a divider." His pandering to the neverending demands of evangelical groups helped create this monster.

The public is also to blame - instead of demanding the return of the Fairness Doctrine in broadcasting, we are treated to nonstop propagandizing and fundraising by every lunatic pseudo-christian impersonater industry on the planet.

6. Doesn't make sense. What-bad Christians vs. good Christians
We are well into a war (civil?) the rich and gullible have declared war on the middle class. The rich want our money while the gullible want us to see Jesus. Many of us are still in denial. Corporations are moving to other countries, they are abandoning their pension plans with the good wishes of the activist judges (certainly not liberal). All taxes on the rich are systematically being repealed. The environment is being exploited with the middle class tax payers picking up the cleanup bill. Where did the Enron money go. Middle class taxpayers have yet to pay off the debit from the early Bush savings and loan scandal. Haliburton is skimming billions. Who will ever pay for the Iraq debacle. The so-called liberal media is owned by big corporations. Voting machines are a joke. The war will be over before many get past the denial. "Marge, is our SUV still in the drive way? Good, all is wonderful".

Try this one:

Or perhaps, something more like the partition of India and Pakistan. I can still see that tragic scene from the Ghandi film in my head--the two long lines trudging wearily past each other with their meager worldly belongings, with each side occasionally erupting into random violence.

Suffering is...
