The object of said game is to tell a lie in public and see if you can get away with it.

The politician that tells the most outlandishly ridiculous lie wins. Bonus points if the statement can be uttered without smirking.

Sometimes, it seems as though that's all they're doing lately. Let's see if we can get away with THIS one. Ok, the sheep bought that. How about THIS?

Today's nominee is Tom Delay:

there is simply no fat left to cut in the federal budget.

This may very well be the most ridiculous statement ever uttered by a politician (though, I really doubt it). It is untrue to the level of hilarity, and I am astounded at the unmitigated gall of making such a statement.

What's worse is that 30% of the American public will probably buy it.

Note: my apologies for linking to the Moonie Times.

Edit: typo

1. It's certainly a game to them
but unfortunately a lot of ordinary people end up paying for their amusement.

2. Hell, I know a LOT of fat that can be cut from the federal government.

His salary for one thing.

Also, the money we're pissing away in Iraq.

I had an idea:

Since we lied ourselves into that one, why don't we just lie our way out? Say that we won and get out. Just say "we won!" Make a parade down Fifth Avenue. Lots of glad-handing and self-puffery and delf-congratulations on "Meet the Press." Lots of photo ops. One inside the Oval Office, even, with everybody having champagne together. Just say "We WON!" and get out! PERIOD. Those who believed the first lies will be loathe to question this one.

Then divert the rest of that money on Katrina relief and the resuscitation of New Orleans.

3. Re: lie our way out - I'm actually surprised that we haven't done that.
Perhaps it's the October '06 surprise. I suspect that we'll pull out a ton of troops by the next election.

Not all, though. Bush can't run on terror if we ran from terror.

4. They are playing games with people's lives...
and they dont' care about the outcome as long as they make a lot of money. They don't care about the poor in NO, and the soldiers they are killing in Iraq.

5. No game - they are deadly serious.
The lies are just part of their method of destroying the Constitution and the middle and lower classes.
