Miers 1993 Abortion Speech
I don't know if this made it up here yet, but WP reported the text of Harriet Miers' 1993 speech before a Dallas women's group:

"The ongoing debate continues surrounding the attempt to once again criminalize abortions or to once and for all guarantee the freedom of the individual women's right to decide for herself whether she will have an abortion," Miers said.
Those seeking to resolve such disputes would do well to remember that "we gave up" a long time ago on "legislating religion or morality," she said. And "when science cannot determine the facts and decisions vary based upon religious belief, then government should not act."

Aside from being one of the poorest sentences I've ever heard from a politician (* excluded) this ought to piss off some fundis.

1. And, shrubo says he knows her, and that she
doesn't change. So, considering the source, I wonder if it's true.

2. NBC Evening News discussed it ...
... not only did they show the absolutely :puke: 1990 hairdo ... but they said that some of the 'Ultra Conservatives' are upset that she tended to lean toward 'self determination' in that speech.

Yeah, how DARE people be allowed to make up their own minds !?!?!

4. It seems she takes a position that is pro-science as well as ..
...very cognizant of the wall of separation between church and state.

6. How long ago was that?
I understand that she donated to gore in '88 and turned to the darkside sometime after that. Depending on when she said it, it may reflect nothing at all on her present views.

7. '93
It was 1993, four years after she endorsed a constitutional amendment banning abortion in 1989. Freakin' weird.
