Statement by Senator Hillary Clinton on the Withdrawal of Harriet Miers
Here is Hillary's statement on the Miers withdrawal which I post without comment:

October 27, 2005

Statement by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on the Withdrawal of Harriet Miers

"I hope that the President honors the Constitution’s mandate and seeks the “advice and consent” of the Senate as he considers his next nominee to serve on the Supreme Court. Whomever he chooses must be a guardian of the rule of law who puts fairness and justice before ideology. I urge the President to take seriously the Constitution’s charge and to engage the U.S. Senate – both Republicans and Democrats – in a process of genuine consultation in order to identify and ultimately confirm a consensus nominee."

1. More like the advice and consent of his base!
Expect his ratings to go up a point or two in a couple polls

...and then go back down once indictments are announced

6. I would rather hear something from her explaining her vote for this war.
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 02:24 PM by patrice
I watched that vote on CSPAN. I was very disappointed in her and very sad.

And don't give me that old saw about "Nobody voted FOR the war." Many of us out here could see what Bush was doing, why couldn't she?

7. Read it and weep
Her issues are here:

http://clinton.senate.gov/issues/nationalsecurity/

I found her speech to AIPAC to be rather... Republican and full of faux shmaltz:

But we know that the goal, the important, essential goal of a democratizing Middle East is complex, and it is not without risks. A few months ago, I went for the second time to Iraq and Kuwait and Afghanistan and Pakistan, and I returned home with hopefulness about what I had seen and learned, but also with a sense of caution about how we should proceed. In Iraq I saw firsthand the daily challenges confronting the Iraqi people. I met with a number of our troops, the brave young men and women who are on freedom's frontlines in Iraq. I met with our civilian representatives in the embassy and other agencies who are also risking their lives to help the Iraqi people.

And I met with representatives of the former interim Iraqi government and the newly elected Iraqi government, as well as private Iraqi citizens.

Now I came away with several overwhelming impressions. First, no matter what one thinks about events that have unfolded in Iraq, there is no doubt that the American military has performed admirably, with professionalism, and that every young man and woman who wears the uniform of our country deserves our support, whether they be active duty, guard, or reserve troop.

You know, it is on trips like that -- despite the often dangerous circumstances, I wish I could bring every one of my constituents -- all 19 million of them and any others who could come -- to see firsthand. I flew from Baghdad to Fallujah in a Blackhawk helicopter; met with the Marines who had liberated Fallujah from the insurgents and terrorists.

10. No mention of how many Iraqi citizens we've killed.
I can tolerate a difference in opinion that is honest, i.e. it weighs positive and negative facts.

I cannot support Hillary Clinton in any way shape or form.

Do you mean, other than the torture? Do you mean, other than the murder of tens of thousands of innocents?

17. If the words
"with a sense of caution about how we should proceed" were removed, it would be a PNAC position paper.

20. Strange Word Choice
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 09:29 PM by Donna Zen
This is a release from the Hillary, so one can imagine that each word has been carefully chosen and re-chosen and re-chosen by highly paid word smiths. What strikes me is the hesitancy and as if she is speaking from a position of weakness. The "advice and consent" clause regarding selection of Supreme Court Justices is more than just a subject of "hope" that a Senator "urges" a president to consider the role of the Senate to honor.

I dunno IG, thanks for posting, but it lacks the necessary quality of strength that comes with a surity of purpose. Rather a note of someone going through the motions.

22. I agree
...and considering her carefully crafted "uber-hawk" image, the hedging in the statement makes me think that she misses the point entirely: standing up for what is right is the true show of strength, not cheerleading the junta.

Yes, there is a certain type of language that must be used, but there are choices within that set, and some are stronger than others. This note misses the mark.

23. I'm certain she'll do a fine job protecting the SCOTUS from video games
with porn in them...

However, in terms of who I will seek to represent MY interests in MY party, after Hillary's culture war pandering, her inability to articulate a consistent message on issues as important as personal bodily freedom, civil liberties, and reproductive choice, and her absolutely unfuckingforgivable metamorphisis into the worst sort of Neo-Con... I FULLY intend to look elsewhere for leadership.
