The Tom DeLay stuff in Franken's book is eye popping.....
I knew plenty about the guy before but Al adds a few things I didn't know. I nearly had an aneurysm when I read that Delay's father was incapacitated in a freak accident (sorry about that, nobody deserves something like that to happen) but then the Delay family, including Tom, decided it was best to not hook him up to a dialysis machine to keep him alive. So basically it's ok for Tom to allow his father to die with dignity, but it is hellfire and brimstone for Michael Schiavo or anybody else to do the same thing. So then, Tom's family entered into a lawsuit against the maker of the equipment that injured his father, and won their case. (Tom signed his share over to his mother) But, of course, anybody familiar with DeLay knows how he rails over "frivolous" lawsuits etc, and he even tried to pass legislation (overriding state product liability laws)that would have prevented anyone from doing just exactly what his and his family did in the case of DeLay v. Midcap Bearing Corp. and Lovejoy Inc. So evidently it's ok for Tom and his family to get compensated for their injuries and suffering (250,000, baby!) but it's not ok for anybody else in this country who were wronged under similar circumstances.

I don't even need to say the guy is a hypocrite. That's always been well known and easily proven. This is just icing on the cake.

I would like to add though, that I empathize with Tom and his family for the accident that happened to his father, I don't want to denigrate that trauma in any manner. I'm sure their settlement was just and well deserved, even though it could never replace their loss. It's just that in utilizing this story I wanted to illustrate a double standard that Tom DeLay, who is a self-righteous and mean-spirited partisan, would happily exploit if it was a Democrat on the other side of the coin.

1. That was posted on DU back during the Schiavo mess.
Even with that, DeLay was first in line to scream how wrong the activist judges were in Terry's situation!

3. GOP's crusade on 'frivilous lawsuits' turns a blind eye to Bush, Santorum
et al and all their own civil suits.

It's okay for them to get recompense....but not okay for you.

It is sad that this kind of accident happens to anyone. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but it's nice to know that if it does happen, the guv'mint will take the manufacturer's side if their shoddy product was responsible for your accident.

Leaves me all warm n' fuzzy.

5. the price of being in the belly of the beast, huh?
:)

Funny thing, my quite liberal cousin is a lawyer in Austin and she married a quite conservative Bush Pioneer. I met him once. He seemed like a decent enough guy. Probably wouldn't agree too much on politics with me though. :)
