15. So is Minnesota.
At least, it is all based on the honor system. Last year for the caucuses, I just showed up and registered on the attending list.

And, I do mark the DFL as recipient of my tax donation on my income tax return.

3. We don't have party registration here.
You go to the poll and chose the party ballot you wish to vote in for that election.

4. You need to add another choice...in many states when you register..
to vote you are not required (or even able) to identify yourself with a party.

In fact, party registration is not the norm. You can add Texas to the list.

That means, * isn't a 'registered' Republican either.

5. In SC there is no party registration
I am a debout Democrat but there is no party registration in this state.

In fact it was funny I was at a local Fall Fair with at our county dem table set up and one of our local candidates passing out info. There is a guy who I guess won some reality political show and he has moved into our area and is now going to run against our like 10 term Democratic Congressman John Spratt. This guys lackeys were going up to people and before talking about their candidate first were asking are you a registered republican and then they would start in on their shpeel.

Ok note: If you are going to move into a community and run for office at least learn the basic structure of governance of that community and/or state. In SC there are no registered Republicans or Registered Democrats.

6. Virginia doesn't do party affiliation.
You are either registered to vote or not registered to vote.

Which of the above should I choose since I am registered to vote, but not affiliated with any party?

8. Independent...I'm 'Swiss".
;)

And all my relatives on the Swiss side are iconoclasts, we aren't especially enamored with the "church people", either. The ones who ask you to their church and then pressure you to go down front, repent your sins and be saved, and the ones who knock on your door and get points for talking about the bible with you, we don't care for them either.

It's a dogma thing. Many of the framers didn't trust parties either. They concentrate power and create conflicts of interest between the people, the parties and the government.

Other than that, I'm a center left progressive.

20. Ha, my Swiss side of the family came to the States in the 1850's.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 02:54 PM by MissMarple
There seems to be a great degree of family similarity across the generations. It is funny, though, that friends who have Swiss acquaintances, say I remind them of their Swiss friends. I don't know if that is a complement or not.

on edit: Also the "I'm Swiss" refers to Bill Maher, slightly tongue in cheek...

18. When I voted in the poll there was Dem, Rep, Green, Ind and other
I thought the pollster was going after party registration.... I would not classify myself as Other because I am a Dem but do not have the opportunity register as one.

Ironically, when I lived in Texas for a year I "didn't bother to register for party" I just now found out I couldn't have even if I wanted to!

Not everyone here is old enough to vote. Or someone can be ineligible for other reasons, like residency, for instance.

33. I was one of them...
My state allows people to register by party, though I chose not to be listed with any party but I am registered to vote. Last time I remember (I wasn't able to vote in the 2004 primary, so it's been a while), "Independent" was the name of a party. I wait until the primaries come up, pick the one that I want to vote in and when I leave the polls I fill out a card to reestablish my no-party affiliation.

12. "Other"
In California we have the option of "Decline to State." I stopped voting party and started voting, or not voting, individuals. I decided voting for the lesser of two evils was still voting for evil.

27. Other- DTS=decline to state (in CA)
this is different than Independent, which in CA at least, registers you with the American Independent Party. I've never belonged to a party, and doubt I ever will. Never voted in a primary until 2000, when the laws in CA changed- voted for McCain, hoping he'd be the nominee Gore would run against, not Bush. Oh well...
