Anyone remember early on in this Administration, officials saying...?
that they had a right to lie to the people? If I recall correctly, it was just before the creation of the Office of Special Plans? (OSP) I recall there was quite a bit of controversy here on DU at that time. After a while, it simply became acceptable that this was how this Administration worked. This was before 9/11 as best I recall...

2. yes. that office would plant mis- or dis-information in media....
...including U.S. media to further (what they consider) U.S. interests....

it was all very KGB-like and supposedly, the plan was shitcanned. But....one wonders...

3. Heard the same thing just about a month ago
when talking heads were doing 'analysis' on Scooter's indictment. What they were saying is that 'it's not a crime to lie to the press (translation: American people)'.

Something is seriously wrong when supporters from any party can push those "values" without any opposition.

4. The first task of the disinformation office was to convince the
American public that it had been disbanded.

5. I remember, and it's always bothered me
I kind of expect them to refer to that statement someday in the future as their grand-unified excuse for every lie they've told since.

7. And are enabled to do so by their base
The religiously insane and the white trash racists who support this administration don't give a fuck if bush, cheney, rove, or whomever lie to them. Because they "believe" the administration is looking out for their and our country's best interests. Those who voted for bush are the number one domestic enemy of our constitution - Period!

9. It is an article of faith that a true leader can't tell the truth.
The base adopted it when it became clear that the only way to get their agenda through were candidates that would lie about their intentions. It was confused with the idea that military plans can't be disclosed and that the war on terror is going to be conducted in secret.

My premise has been that the right wing always knew Bush was a liar. They just believed he was lying to the moderates to get his rightie agenda. I believe that they have now come around to the not-surprising conclusion that a guy who will lie to most of the country will lie to them as well, after the Harriet Miers fiasco, the Iraq fiasco, the Katrina fiasco, the cronyism, etc. Now the right wing watches Bush like a hawk, on one hand telling US that we have to trust him because he's the only president we have, while requring concrete, observable action in picking SC justices, making tax cuts, killing muslims, etc.

10. They are slow to come around
but may do nonetheless, albeit at least 8 years behind evil liberals. They will also cotton to the idea of stem cell research when they are diagnozed with Alzheimers. I fail to find the fun in going through life ignorant.

11. maybe i was dreaming
but before the 2004 election i seem to remember seeing donald rumsfeld on teevee saying that "they would lie to the american people anytime they felt it was necessary".

I could not believe seeing it, and could not believe that every single democratic campaign ad did not open with that video clip.

but, then again, maybe i WAS dreaming.....
