To the Editor:
Re "Heroes Abroad, Unknown at Home," by David Brooks (column, Nov. 27):
Why can't Mr. Brooks understand that someone who does not believe in the purposes of the war in Iraq can also be a patriot? Soldiers and marines like Capt. Christopher Ieva and his comrades are remarkable individuals, and their courage and valor are indeed "awe-inspiring."
But it is just because this kind of courage is so special and admirable that we who rely on these men and women to protect us must never put them in harm's way unless the cause is absolutely just and there is no other recourse.
It is the politics of the Iraq war that are being questioned, not the valor of our troops.
